abolition man essay A peer-reviewed electronic journal published by the Institute for Ethics and. 19(1) September 2008. The Invention of bluest eyes Man: A Response to get the look C. Summary! S. Lewiss The Abolition of Man. Gregory E. Jordan. University of South Florida. Journal of Evolution and Technology - Vol. 19 Issue 1 September 2008 - pgs 35-41. In his famous essay, The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis argued that the use of science and technology to river get the modify the human mind would destroy humanity.

Some of the summary, concerns Lewis raised are philosophically profound: Is it desirable for humans to modify their minds, and if so, in what ways? By what principles should such profound self-shaping be guided? Will post-humanity be freer or more enslaved? Is manipulating the core nature of humanity even rational? Since this essay was first written, it seems all the decoding, more likely that humans will someday have the ability to modify motivation, not by Lewiss eugenics, pre-natal conditioning, and education and propaganda based on a perfect applied psychology, but by applied neuroscience, drugs, computerized implants, brain-machine interfaces, mind uploading, nanoscale devices, and other advanced technologies. This essay examines the issue of modifying motivations and bluest summary, answers some of Lewiss concerns. This above all: to thine own self be true. Strategies! William Shakespeare, Hamlet Act 1, Scene 3. In his essay, The Abolition of Man, C. S. Bluest Eyes! Lewis (Lewis 1943) wrote about the use of science and technology to modify the human mind.

In particular, he considered the possibility that human beings in the future would be able to shape and hall decoding, modify their own minds into any form they desired. Summary! He argued that humans who exercised such power would destroy themselves and river island get the look, the rest of humanity. Since this essay was written in 1943, it seems even more likely that humans will someday have the ability to shape their own minds, not through eugenics, pre-natal conditioning, and education and propaganda based on a perfect applied psychology, as Lewis thought, but rather through an applied neuroscience, drugs, computerized implants, brain-machine interfaces, mind uploading, nanoscale devices, or other advanced technologies. The issues that concerned C. S. Bluest Summary! Lewis, then, are still of concern to us today. Is it desirable for humans to develop and apply methods for altering their own minds, and corporate strategies, if so, in what ways? By what principles should such profound self-shaping be guided? Will post-humanity be freer or more enslaved? Is manipulating the core nature of humanity even rational? In order to bluest eyes think about this more clearly, let us imagine that neuroscience has been perfected and the human mind is deterrence theory perfectly understood in every detail. A technology has been developed which allows every aspect of the bluest eyes summary, mind to be modified in any way that is island get the look desired and physically possible.

Now human beings can remove, add, or change any aspect of their minds, including their own motivations. Motivations, in the cognitive psychological sense, may be considered the physical mechanisms or neural pathways by bluest eyes summary, which instincts, drives, desires, wants, or needs predispose an organism to certain thoughts or behaviors under the right circumstances. (The terminology for these things must be loose because the biology underlying these phenomena is still being investigated.) Motivations may be distinguished from emotions, emotional states, moods, and beliefs, or cognitive perceptions or conceptions about states of affairs. Hall Encoding Decoding! Motivations are not rationalizations for eyes summary behavior; such rationalizations may arise alongside of, or even after, behavior (Dennett 2003). In a sense, motivations pre-exist rational calculation or even consciousness; they are the foundation of reason, since reason facilitates the fulfilment of motivations. They are also the island, foundation of our values, since feelings about bluest, what is valuable are related to hall encoding decoding our motives.

If the rational application of bluest eyes summary human instrumental power depends upon pre-existing motivations, we discover a problem in trying to use those pre-existing motivations to change themselves. Upon what basis could we judge the value of our own motivations when our value judgments depend upon pre-existing motivations? Self-reference in determining values short-circuits the process of evaluating modifications to ones own motivations. The total power to shape ones own motivations exposes the lack of an independent framework of purpose from which to do so. The final stage is come when Man . . . has obtained full control over himself.

Human nature will be the deterrence theory, last part of Nature to surrender to Man. The battle will then be won. We shall have taken the thread of life out of the hand of Clotho and be henceforth free to make our species whatever we wish it to be. The battle will indeed be won. But who, precisely will have won it?. . Bluest! . They are the motivators, the creators of motives. But how are they going to deterrence be motivated? . . . However far they go back, or down, they can find no ground to stand on. Every motive they try to act on becomes at once petitio. (Lewis 1943, n.p.) Is it reasonable at all to suppose that we would want to modify our motivations, even if we had the power? Perhaps motivations would be blank with regard to themselves, just as the brain, the seat of sensation, is unable to sense itself. Motivations might have a sort of inertia so that those who come into the power to modify them will nevertheless preserve them, continuing on the same trajectory as before. However, in line with the bluest eyes summary, inertia analogy, objects continue on a straight path only 2nd class citizen, if they are not acted upon by eyes summary, another force.

There are always other forces acting upon our motivations. First of all, our motivations act upon each other. A single human mind possesses many motivations, and citizen, these can obstruct or contradict or compete with each other. Then there are the forces of other minds society, and the forces of the general environment of the mind, including everything from the cosmos to the minds own embodiment. Imagine a very non-controversial example: a person who likes to summary eat chocolate. Suppose that he wishes that he did not want to eat chocolate a clash between two motivations in one person. Or, suppose that his friends try to talk him into not eating chocolate that is, society attempts to mould his motivation.

Or suppose that the store shelves are empty of chocolate that is, that the environment decisively blocks the fulfilment of advantages of franchise his motivation. Bluest Summary! For any of these reasons, this person could in theory be convinced to modify his motivations so that he did not like to eat chocolate any more. But would this be the right thing for him to do? On what basis could he judge between his own motivations, or between his own motivations, on the one hand, and what would be more conformable to society or the environment, on the other hand? This example is fairly innocuous in comparison to the many other possible applications of deterrence theory mind-modification. For example, if mind-modification were possible, some people might eliminate their motivations to commit crimes and anti-social acts, which we might regard as a welcome development.

Or frighteningly, some people might make themselves more lacking in compassion or concern for others welfare. And yet in either case, our value judgments about these modifications to motivations would draw upon our pre-existing motivations. Those pre-existing motivations may be considered provisional, artificial constructions, because they can be changed at will. Lewis argued that there were only two things which could possibly guide those who possessed the power to change their own motivations: (1) temporary survivals, in their own minds of the Tao , or (2) irrational impulses and whims. By the Tao Lewis referred vaguely to notions of natural law and universal morality which, he supposed, should be self-evidently rational and valid. In the Tao itself, as long as we remain within it, we find the concrete reality in which to participate is to be truly human: the real common will and common reason of humanity, alive, and growing like a tree, and branching out, as the bluest eyes, situation varies, into ever new beauties and dignities of application. Level! While we speak from bluest eyes summary, within the Tao we can speak of Man having power over himself in a sense truly analogous to deterrence theory an individual's self-control. (Lewis 1943, n.p.) Lewis described the summary, Tao as objective value and conscience apart from instinct. It was supposed to be the common heritage of humanity, but nevertheless, as the mystery of humanity, it needed to encoding be taught to children by summary, teachers who would encourage some motivations and weaken others. To illustrate the river get the, Tao more concretely, Lewis sketched a universal code of behavior, including such things as benevolence, justice, veracity, mercy, and eyes summary, so on.

There are no doubt commonalities among human cultures along those lines, but there are also many differences among human cultures, and cultures can change over time. Deterrence Theory! Lewis regarded the Tao as self-evidently real and decisive, so he did not really claim to need to prove its existence or value. Because Lewis provided no evidence for its existence and its specific values, it is difficult for us to eyes see the Tao as a foundation for judging motivations. Nevertheless, there is the house spirits a certain attraction in Lewiss notion of looking outside ourselves for bluest a foundation, if no foundation seems to be present in our minds. Lewiss solution was to decoding be truly human by participating in shared human values, the mystery of humanity. If there is a discernible set of bluest shared values among human beings, these could serve to guide the modification, if any, of motivations. But if these shared values arise from human nature and deterrence theory, the natural environments of human beings, then following them is arbitrary submission to nature.

As Lewis noted of summary those with the power to modify motivations, If they accept [the Tao], then they are no longer the makers of conscience but still its subjects, and their final conquest over Nature has not really happened (Lewis 1943, n.p.). In fact, Lewis regarded the preservation of Tao in such a circumstance as confusion. The second possible guide to modifying motivations, according to Lewis, would be pure impulsiveness. He notes, for example, that those who stand outside all judgments of value cannot have any ground for preferring one of their own impulses to advantages of franchise another except the bluest, emotional strength of that impulse (Lewis 1943, n.p.). The mind decides to the house act by deciding among weighted inner motivations, so for Lewis, the bluest eyes, motivation for action of those who have the power to island get the change their motivations, and who reject the bluest eyes summary, Tao, must rest in the pre-rational selection of motivations by their felt emotional weight at advantages and disadvantages, a given moment. However, the criteria for determining the emotional strength of impulses come from pre-existing motivations. This ground for preferring one impulse to another, then, cannot stand outside all judgments of value. The motivations of an individuals mind are what they are because of all the factors that shaped that individuals mind, from the individuals remotest ancestors and their environments, down through that individuals embodiment and experiences since conception. When we look behind our natural motivations, we see an infinite regress of deeply complex causations. Bluest! So motivations have a history and a reason for being the way they are, but this in theory, itself is no help in evaluating those motivations, because value judgments depend upon bluest eyes summary, pre-existing motivations. We do not even have grounds for judging our impulses irrational since they could only be judged so by 2nd class, reference to bluest eyes summary purposeful action. For Lewis, human self-manipulation at the most intimate levels of mind would require the reduction of all of humanity to raw material. It is in Man's power to treat himself as a mere natural object and his own judgements of value as raw material for scientific manipulation to alter at will. The objection to his doing so does not lie in 2nd class, the fact that this point of view (like one's first day in a dissecting room) is painful and summary, shocking till we grow used to it.

The pain and the shock are at citizen, most a warning and a symptom. The real objection is that if man chooses to eyes treat himself as raw material, raw material he will be: not raw material to be manipulated, as he fondly imagined, by himself, but by mere appetite, that is, mere Nature . . . (Lewis 1943, n.p.) The phrase which vexed Lewis at hall decoding, the beginning of his essay, mans conquest of nature, sets up a distinction between human beings and the rest of nature, which is untenable for true naturalism. If we accept that human beings are natural beings, arising from nature and part of it, then mans conquest of nature is an incoherent statement. Even if we understood nature here as that part of nature which can be distinguished from man in the sense of an individual human being, control of nature still could not include control of ones self. Control of ones own mind would only eyes summary, make sense if there were parts of the theory, mind which could be distinguished as man from other parts of the mind, parts which would be not man or less man. Thus it may be possible to suppose, according to eyes summary Lewiss argument, that humans could possess impulses and motivations which are less distinctively human, less worthy of humanity impulses and motivations contrary to the Tao . It is clear, then, that Lewis saw the possession of and disadvantages a particular set of values as an authentic and indispensable criterion for humanness.

For Lewis, accessing the power to modify ones own motivations was abandoning ones own human nature. Those who would do so. . . . Bluest Summary! have sacrificed their own share in traditional humanity in order to devote themselves to the task of deciding what Humanity shall henceforth mean. Good and decoding, bad, applied to them, are words without content; for it is from them that the content of these words is henceforth to summary be derived. . . . It is not that they are bad men. And Disadvantages Of Franchise! They are not men at all. Stepping outside the Tao, they have stepped into the void. . Bluest! . . Their subjects . . . are not men at all: they are artefacts. Mans final conquest has proved to be the abolition of Man. (Lewis 1943, n.p.) Ironically, according to Lewis and his followers, it was by preserving natural human nature (and its distinctive values and motivations) that human beings should fend off their transformation by nature into undesirable forms and states. In one sense, Lewis and his followers were right that the power to corporate level modify our minds, including our motivations, would not help us to make decisions about what is authentic about us, whether we should like ourselves, or if so, what parts, and what would constitute beneficial or maleficent changes to bluest ourselves. In fact, the power to modify our minds would only give us the ability to change ourselves according to the terms by which we understand ourselves and our qualities, either to modify ourselves (by changing our dispensable features) or to encoding decoding destroy ourselves (by changing our indispensable features). The terms by which we understand ourselves and our qualities arise in eyes, turn from the theory, nature of our minds at a particular point in time, since our minds are complex systems and confluences of external influences. The state of a mind is an eyes summary, open, complex, dynamic system embedded in the rest of citizen nature, and the sense of self, including notions about what is indispensable about it, depends upon the specific state of the mind.

Thus, we are prepared to see our notions of what is eyes summary natural and what is human as contingent phenomena of nature, arising in particular states of level mind. There is no need for seeing through things for ever, as Lewis writes, because when intention reaches instrumental power over itself, it has indeed come to its foundation, or at bluest summary, least, its source. Control over ones own mind does not so much create a feedback loop as expose and tighten one that already exists the feedback loop between forces within the advantages, mind that give rise to a state of that mind, including consciousness and bluest eyes summary, a sense of self, and also the feedback loop between that mind and the house of the sparknotes, everything outside of it, from its physical embodiment to the most distant reaches in space and time of the summary, cosmos. The difference between a circuit and a short-circuit depends upon of the, what sort of loop one wants. There are frames of reference which do not depend upon irrational impulses, or a mystical Tao, and which do not necessarily lead to self-destruction (in the way in which one understands ones self). Eyes! Self-knowledge and world-knowledge could enable a state of mind to make wiser and encoding decoding, more coherent decisions about self-modification than it would make if it took into bluest eyes summary account only momentary impulses or a limited subset of authentic human nature. A knower of this sort could be true to itself and possess integrity because it would draw upon an understanding of its whole self and its context in the whole cosmos.

By applying human reasoning, we are able to come to understand more of ourselves than a momentary impulse and hall encoding, more of our environment than what is perceived immediately before us. We can grasp a deeper sense of bluest eyes ourselves, extending in time and of the spirits sparknotes, encompassing our entire natures; we can also grasp a broader sense of the world around us and our fellow human beings. Knowledge about the self and knowledge about the cosmos, including that knowledge which we acquire by the assistance of our fellow human beings, can extend the framework of our decisions about modifying our own minds. If we made our decisions about eyes summary, modification in the context of understanding our entire minds, then we would draw upon more than our momentary impulses. Hall! If we understood the eyes summary, mind as all of its motivations and theory, characteristics and bluest eyes summary, components, not only in the present moment, but also in the past (as in the remembering, narrative self) and in the future (as in rational calculations of corporate strategies possibilities) however we may harmonize its disparate elements then our decisions could draw upon a wholeness of self. The same goes with an understanding of the world around us, including the insights of bluest other human beings. Returning to the example of the person who likes to eat chocolate he could make a decision about changing his motivation based on profound, comprehensive self-knowledge, about why he likes chocolate, how he likes chocolate, what role this desire has played in his past life, and what role it might play in his future life. Such a decision could also be based on profound, comprehensive knowledge of the corporate, world, including the nature of chocolate, how his desire for eyes chocolate evolved, what functions this desire has or might serve, what social meaning and consequences his desire for chocolate may have, what effect it might have on the environment, and so on.

Equipped with such knowledge and self-knowledge, this person could be better guided in deciding to modify his desire for chocolate. Nevertheless, one thing seems clear that the precise state of of the sparknotes mind at the moment a decision is made about whether or not to modify ones self and how to modify ones self if so, would be uniquely critical. Everything that would follow from a process of eyes self-modification would depend upon that initial condition. Technology might allow one to restore some changes to their initial state, but whether or not there would be motivation for doing so would depend upon the changes made. It would be easy to theory imagine that such changes could have undesirable effects (from the vantage point of the initial condition) if the initial state of summary mind applied insufficient knowledge. Perfect self-knowledge in real-time, like omniscience about the rest of the universe, may be physically impossible, but what better knowledge would allow one to do would be to make more authentic, integral determinations of 2nd class ones own motivations and the contexts of those motivations. It is precisely when our humanity is not a mystery that we can make informed, appropriate judgments about ourselves and how to act with regard to eyes summary ourselves.

Far from being a basilisk which kills what it sees and only sees by theory, killing, as Lewis described science, scientific understanding of the eyes summary, human mind and the universe at and disadvantages of franchise, large enables human beings to better discern their own values and the context in which those values have meaning, and applied science and technology provide humans the opportunity to realize those values. It should be possible for human beings to modify their own minds in such a way as to increase whatever motivations or characteristics they believe are distinctively human or indispensable to themselves as they wish to be. Bluest Summary! In this sort of feedback loop, one might expect amplification. Humans ability to modify their own minds might allow them to become more human, that is, possess to a more notable degree whatever characteristics they consider distinctively human. The term superhuman would be an apt description of the result, not in the vainglorious sense, but in the precise sense that the the house sparknotes, superhuman would be more deeply characterized by human motives and human qualities.

For example, if benevolence is an indispensable human characteristic, as Lewis suggested, then a human who could modify himself could make himself more benevolent, and eyes, thus more human. There are no easy answers to what humans should want to become or what humans should value about deterrence theory, themselves. Humans have been working on these questions for thousands of years. Eyes Summary! The approach of mind-modification technologies does not give us a direction; rather, it conveys the urgency for and disadvantages of franchise us to pick a direction, because a decision can no longer be delayed, and the consequences may truly be everlasting. In this essay, I have deliberately avoided discussing Lewiss dark vision of an elite group of Conditioners who use a technology of bluest summary modifying minds to enslave the rest of humanity. 2nd Class! I do not wish to bluest eyes summary mount here an extensive critique of Lewiss point that mans power over Nature turns out to of the spirits be a power exercised by some men over other men with Nature as its instrument. However, I would observe that it is precisely self-knowledge, made possible by bluest eyes, sciences of the mind, that may someday enable human beings to analyze their desire for power over one another. Although it may be too optimistic to presume that this knowledge will inevitably result in greater mutual understanding and social harmony, surely this knowledge will affect the dynamic play of motivations within human beings. Self-knowledge will be a factor and it will be taken into consideration. Humans may not be so anxious to dominate each other if the advantages and disadvantages, origins of bluest summary such desires are laid bare as primitive, irrational survivals of innate tendencies to advantages and disadvantages of franchise ruthless competition over rank, tendencies which may once have served a useful evolutionary purpose, but which may no longer serve our purposes.

The overall trend of history, as FM-2030 (1970, 1973) illustrated, is toward more nonviolence, peace, tolerance, mutual understanding, mutual respect, and freedom. It may be that, ever since they acquired modern intelligence, human beings have been moving ever closer to summary an accommodation of one another, a rapprochement based on intelligently-realized mutual benefit. Deterrence! If that is the case, more scientific analysis and applied technology could accelerate this trend. Bluest Summary! Is humans present, relative inability to modify themselves their most human characteristic? Is the reluctance by some today to modify themselves the highest human value? If human nature is to mean anything, it must surely refer to the actual natures of human beings, who typically desire to be free from many of their limitations so they can become happier. It is not the sciences of the mind and technologies for river get the look modifying the mind that would most likely lead to the extinction of the human nature that we value.

Rather, it is the relinquishment of progress in those sciences and technologies of the bluest eyes, mind that would more likely result in the extinction of advantages and disadvantages human nature and summary, all its hopes and theory, dreams, a true abolition of man. The English word invent comes from a Latin word meaning find, and it is by finding ourselves, that is, by discerning our natures for the very first time, that we can acquire not only the eyes summary, power but also the wisdom to bring out the potential of advantages what is best in ourselves. We can choose to make a leap not into a Void, but rather into eyes summary ourselves and into the fullness of the world unveiled by our investigations. And we can make this leap together, holding each others hands. Dennett, D. C. Freedom evolves. 2003. New York: Viking Penguin. FM-2030 (F.

In this articles, I'll try to get you excited about of franchise writing your Extended Essay and provide you with the resources to get an bluest, A. I'm a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to receive an A on my IB Extended Essay. If you dont believe me, the encoding decoding proof is in bluest summary the IBO pudding, If you're confused by what this report means, EE is short for Extended Essay, and English A1 is the decoding subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In laymans terms, my IB Diploma was graded during May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received a grade A. The IB Extended Essay (or EE) is a 4,000 word structured mini-thesis that you write under the supervision of an advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts towards your IB Diploma (to learn about all of the IB diploma requirements, check out our other article). I'll explain exactly how the EE affects your diploma later in this article. For the Extended Essay, you choose a research question as a topic; this topic needs to bluest, be approved by IBO (which is not very difficult). You can do a typical research paper such as in this paper, or you conduct an experiment/solve a problem such as in river get the look this paper. Bluest. Most schools allow you to pick your advisor (an IB teacher preferably at your school, although you can also get access to one at another school through the Pamoja Education). I'll explain how to pick your IB EE advisor below.

The IB Extended Essay must include a cover page, an citizen, abstract (one-page synopsis of summary your essay), a table of contents, the 4,000-word essay (which will range from deterrence theory, 10-20 pages depending on whether your topic requires illustrations such as an eyes, experiment would), and a bibliography. Your completed Extended Essay is hall encoding then sent to the IBO to be graded (I will go into summary, more detail on grading below). What Should You Write About in Your Extended Essay? You can technically write about anything, so long as the IBO approves it. However, you should choose a topic that falls into one of the IB Course Categories, (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.) which shouldnt be difficult because there are so many class subjects. Advantages And Disadvantages. Here is a range of sample topics with the attached extended essay: You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic. Summary. So, how do you pick when the options are limitless? I will help you with that next: 6 Tips for Writing a Grade A Extended Essay. Tip #1: Write About Something You Enjoy Because You'll Be Spending a Lot of Time on corporate level It.

I love British theatre and ended up writing mine about a revolution in post-WWII British theatre #theatrenerd. I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the Extended Essay seriously. Summary. I ended up receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship to USCs School of Dramatic Arts program and in my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay. I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship. How do you find a topic you are passionate about? Start by river get the figuring out bluest, which classes you enjoy the most and why you enjoy them. Do you like Math because you like to citizen, problem solve? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze texts? Once you have figured out a general subject area such as Physics, you should brainstorm more specific topics by bluest putting pen to paper.

What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending an encoding decoding, hour on this type of eyes summary brainstorming.

After doing this preliminary brainstorming make sure to choose: Tip #2: Chose a Topic That Is Not Too Broad, But Not Too Narrow. This is a fine line. Of The Sparknotes. You need to write about something specific, but not so specific that you cant write 4,000 words on it . You cant write about WWII because that would be a book worth of material. Summary. You dont want to write about what type of soup prisoners of the house of the sparknotes war received in POW camps because you probably cant come up with 4000 words on it. However, you could possibly write about summary how the conditions in citizen German POW camps were directly affected by the Nazis successes and failures. This may be too obvious of bluest summary a topic, but you get my point. If you're really stuck trying to find a not too broad or narrow topic, I recommend trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. If you refer back to the topics I mentioned above, you may notice that two use comparisons. I also used comparison in my EE, comparing Harold Pinter's Party Time to John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in order to show a transition in British Theatre.

Topics with comparisons of advantages and disadvantages 2-3 plays/books/diets/etc. tend to be in the sweet spot of not too narrow or broad because you can analyze each portion and after doing in-depth analysis on each, you compare and explain the significance of the comparison. The key here is that the comparison needs to be significant. I compared two plays to show a transition in British Theatre. Comparisons are not the bluest eyes only way to the house of the spirits sparknotes, get a grade A EE. If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison based topic and summary you are still unsure if a topic is too broad or narrow, spend 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is out there.

If there are over of the sparknotes, 1,000 books/articles/documentaries out there on the exact topic, it may be too broad. If there are only 2 books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. If you are still unsure, ask your advisor! Speaking of advisors: Tip #3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Very Familiar With Your Topic and Who Seems Excited About It. If you are not certain of who you would like to be your advisor, I would start by creating a list of your top three choices.

Next, create a list of pros and cons (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!). For example, Mr. Green is bluest eyes my favorite teacher, and we get along really well, but he teaches English, and I want to advantages and disadvantages of franchise, conduct an bluest summary, experiment to compare the efficiency of American Hybrid Cars to Foreign Hybrid Cars. Ms. White teaches Physics, I had her a year ago, and she liked me. She could help me design my experiment. I am going to ask Ms.

White! Do NOT just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor. They may be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. Deterrence. I would not suggest asking your Biology teacher to guide you in writing your English EE. EXCEPTION: If you have a teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my Theatre topic), you can ask that instructor. Bluest Eyes Summary. Consider all of your options first before you do. Deterrence Theory. There was no theatre teacher at my school, so I could not find a theatre-specific advisor, so I chose the bluest summary next best thing.

Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an Agreement Form. Make sure you ask your IB coordinator if there is any required paperwork. IBO does not require any paperwork. If your school needs a Form signed, make sure you bring it with you when you ask a teacher to 2nd class, be your EE advisor. Tip #4: Choose an Advisor Who Will Push You to bluest summary, Be Your Best. Some teachers may just take on students because they have to hall decoding, and may not be passionate about reading drafts and bluest eyes summary may not give you a lot of feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the decoding time to eyes, read several drafts and give you extensive notes.

I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make the draft better. Get The Look. Ask a teacher that you have experience with either through class directly or through an extracurricular activity. Bluest. Do not ask a teacher that you have no connection to; a teacher, who does not know you, is unlikely to get the, push you. Note: The IBO only allows advisors to suggest improvements to the EE, but they may not be engaged in writing the EE. The IBO recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in total with the candidate discussing the bluest eyes EE. Tip #5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow.

IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be 1-2 pages double-spaced), research question/focus (i.e. what you will be investigating), body, and conclusion (about 1 page double-spaced). An essay that has unclear or poor organization will be graded poorly. Also, make sure your 300-word abstract is clear and briefly summarizes your whole argument. Corporate Strategies. An ambiguous abstract will make it more challenging for the reader to follow your essays argument and will also hurt the bluest grading of island look your EE.

The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. Eyes Summary. It should be about 8-18 pages double-spaced (again just depending on whether or not you include diagrams). Your body can be split into multiple parts. For example, if you are doing a comparison, you might have 1/3 of your body as Novel A Analysis, 1/3 as Novel B Analysis, and the last 1/3 as Comparison of Novel A and B Analysis. If you are conducting an experiment or analyzing data such as in this EE , your EE body will have a clear and deterrence obvious parts following the scientific method: stating the research question, discussing your method, showing the bluest eyes data, analyzing the of the data, discussing uncertainties, and drawing a conclusion/evaluating the bluest experiment. Tip #6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later! You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in a week and get an A. You will be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books, plays, and watching movies). Start the deterrence research possible as soon as possible.

Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your Senior Year; others will take them as later as February of Senior Year. Your school will give you your deadline; if they haven't mentioned it by February of Junior year, ask your IB coordinator. Some schools will give you a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to summary, meet with your advisor and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure if you are on a specific timeline. Here is my recommended timeline, it is earlier than most schools, but it will save you so much heartache (trust me, I remember): January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least top 3). February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor (if he or she says no, keep asking others until you find one - see my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor). The House. April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of bluest your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least 7-10) to your EE advisor. Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline.

Summer between Junior and the house spirits sparknotes Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between Junior and Senior Year! I know, I know no one wants to work during the bluest eyes summary summer, but trust me this will save you so much stress come the fall when you are busy with college applications and other IB internal assessments for your IB classes. You will want to deterrence, have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely wont be able to get everything you want to bluest, say into 4000 articulate words the first time. Try to get this first draft into the best possible shape you can, so that you do not have to work on river too many revisions during the summary school year on top of 2nd class your homework/college applications/work/extracurriculars/etc. August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of your EE to your advisor and bluest summary receive feedback. Work on incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft. And Disadvantages Of Franchise. September/October of eyes Senior Year: Submit second draft of EE to your advisor (if necessary) and citizen receive their feedback. Eyes Summary. Work on creating the best possible final draft. November-February of Senior Year: Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to IBO. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate.

The early bird DOES get the worm! Extended essays are marked by external assessors (examiners appointed by the IB) on a scale of get the look 0 to 36. There are general and subject-specific criteria, at a ratio of summary 2:1 (24 possible marks for the general criteria and 12 marks for the house of the the subject-specific one). The total mark is converted into bluest, a grade from A to E, using the below parameters: Here is the typical breakdown of scores (from 2008): How Does the river get the look Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma?
