Nanovo: From The Cosy Dens of Another Time. by Benjamin Tallis. ‘Who could possibly want such things?” When Jiri Mrazek and Adam Karasek started Nanovo in 2009, they were prepared for the fact that their salvaged and is self restored modernist furniture would not be to industry value chain, everyone’s taste. However, Karasek’s mother’s reaction (quoted above) shows the scale of the challenge they faced. Given the what is self schemata, general revival of modernist architecture and design over the last decade, this may seem surprising, but it reveals much about a regionally particular politics of memory that colours attitudes towards domestic design as much as architecture. However, Nanovo’s success also shows how dominant narratives about the past and the present are being challenged and highlights the role of material objects in doing so. Many Czechs share the – now widespread – appreciation of the International Style. This strand of modernism carries the echoes of the First Republic, the Czech golden age, when a flourishing of art and design and the big-thinking industrial dynamism of companies such as Bata, combined to thrust the newly-stated nation onto the world stage.

This celebrated history has long allowed Czechs to embrace the International Style as a part of their own heritage, exemplified in the Tugendhat and Muller villas, but mid-century meant something very different here than the purposeful elegance of Mad Men or the soaring hope of Eero Saarinen. After ‘89, the urge to disavow the communist past led to Cancer with Information, a disavowal of its aesthetics. At home this often meant junking the old in what, favour of the flat-packed or multinationally homogenous new and many design classics of this other modernism became flotsam and jetsam in the currents of post-communist transition. Mrazek and Karasek travelled and studied abroad, where they saw that, far from being shunned, the designs of this other time, of this other modernity were celebrated. These experiences drove them to question the conformism of domestic consumption after communism and to speculate that the objects, the material remains of that past could also have a place in the present. Inspired by flea-market-furnished Berlin, Mrazek and Karasek, set about rescuing the “gems” of communist-era domestic design from thrift stores and junk shops around the Czech Republic.

Rescuing domestic objects from the garbage heap of history, resonates with bigger trends in Czech society that seek to reclaim private memories from the blanket condemnation that obscures the lived experiences of is psychology this period. This resistance to locally-dominant politics of what schemata memory is of the house on mango street interwoven with a dissatisfaction with – what might be termed – the ‘multinational style’, the schemata, homogenizing blandness that became characteristic of is psychology field much of the is self schemata, 90s and 00s in ‘transition’ and which manifested itself in the limited choice of Western-approved or Western-owned furniture, beer or politics. Nanovo’s focus is on domestic objects and their ever-changing collection of household and industrial modernism. However, the Jitona sideboards, Tesla desklamps, Pragotron clocks, workshop lighting are complemented by other minor markers of time and place: chicken-shaped plastic eggcups, vintage paddles for boats long stuck-up other creeks, maps of the industry chain, world made for socialist classroom walls. These objects recall the private lives of Czechs and Slovaks in is self, the period of summary house on mango ‘Normalisation’.

This closing down of the what is self schemata, public sphere, a social permafrost that followed Prague’s most famous spring, heightened the importance of creating ‘cosy dens’[1]: domestic realms of retreat, resilience and resistance which functioned as interior ‘outsides’, where children could grow up and a medical happy times could be had, in spite of “post-totalitarian” one party rule. What? As Charity Scribner notes in Requiem for Communism [2] consideration of the domestic objects of these times allows for strengths and weaknesses argument, collective “memory work on a human scale”. Despite muddled media reports,[3] Mrazek is adamant that Nanovo does not seek to satiate Ostalgic desires for retro kitsch that rest on what is self schemata the allure of a dangerous regime now thrillingly exotic at a safe historical distance. The focus is on design quality rather than the house on mango street, period or conditions of their production. The Finnish PeeM chair – a leather upholstered armchair, which turns on an aluminium four-spoke base – has proved as popular now as it was in 70s Czechoslovakia.

Mrazek argues that: “These pieces looked good 20 years ago; and they will look good in 20 years.” Nonetheless, Nanovo’s style certainly appeals to those, like its founders, who grew up in the 70s and 80s and who were “heavily shaped” by the architecture and urbanism of the time as these “styles unconsciously sunk under our skin” as Mrazek puts it. Mrazek and Karasek grew up respectively in the lower and upper parts of Prague’s Smichov district, where they still live, although they have now swapped places on the hill. From flea markets to the annual design supermarket, via the opening of a large warehouse space (and mid-century Aladdin’s cave) in the outlying industrial area of Vysocany and, recently, the what is self, opening of a flagship store in with Essay, Prague’s Old Town, Nanovo has come in from the margins and schemata spawned a series of imitators. This growing acceptance and success speaks to Information, the changing conditions of the politics of what schemata memory – and its material manifestations in strengths ontological, the Czech Republic. Nanovo’s founders are part of the generation known locally as ‘Husak’s Children’ – after the Czechoslovak leader Gustav Husak who oversaw the period of normalisation.

Coming of age only after ’89, this generation has sought continuity between their past and present; to reconcile the material environments of chidhood and adolescence with those encountered later. It is no surprise therefore that the ‘Nanovo look’ is commonplace in the new generation of bars and cafes they own, run and frequent: Cafe Kaaba’s opaxit glass-topped coffee tables, the schemata, industrial lamps in Cafe Sladkovsky, the Ton and house street Tatra chairs in Cafe v Lese and the plectrum-shaped formica ‘Brusel’ tables in the Malkovich bar are but a few of what is self schemata many possible examples. These hipster hangouts combine internationally recognisable traits with a distinctive Czechness that speaks of a resurgent self-confidence – a willingness to rescue their childhood from the totalising judgements of history and to reject the Fighting with Essay, ‘post-historical’ ablandisements of transition. The Ambiente restaurant group has also got in on this act with its haute reinterpretations of classic Czech cuisine but, even more so, with its ‘Lokal’ pubs. These locales pride themselves on what serving only Czech products – and some of the finest Pilsner in Prague – but it is in the decor and in the small touches, such as the flea-market-familiar plastic bread baskets, that Lokal really stands out. The wooden benches and wall coverings feature etched, backlit graffiti of the of the on mango, kind familiar from school desks Europe-wide, harking back to the schooldays of designer Maxim Velcovsky (born 1976) and many others. The bathroom decoration takes things a step further with the walls (in the gents) covered from what is self schemata floor to ceiling in a scrapbook collage of images from the airline industry value chain, 70s and what schemata 80s: Niki Lauda’s Ferrari and Skoda sports editions; Franz Beckenbauer Michel Platini and Treatment Cancer Antonin Panenka; glamorous foreign air hostesses and local soft porn. These images are taken from period magazines – not only from Czechoslovakia and other Warsaw Pact countries, but from Western publications as well. What Schemata? Lokal’s fixtures, fittings and collage questions the sweeping judgements that emphasise clear-cut difference between West and East and the isolation and inferiority of the latter, by recalling the ways in which people lived and the connections between the summary of the house on mango street, blocs. Mrazek – a big fan of Lokal – was also quick to note the international influence in Czech design during communism: “You can see that a magazine came from, lets say Italy, and that then there are some designs for lamps that, don’t copy but somehow work with, what the what, designers had seen there.” A generation of Fighting Essay what Mrazek describes as “open-minded” Czechs are looking afresh at the aspects of their past, which, far from being something to be ashamed of what is self schemata are now celebrated: for the skill of designers and of the house on mango architects in remaining conversant with and making major contributions to modernist design under testing circumstances.

Emphasising the connections of this modernism to Western outsides, rather than seeing it as product of isolated communist inferiority, has helped spur public re-appraisals of is self schemata brutalist architecture as well as of Nanovo-style domestic design. However, the Czechoslovak modernism of the 60s, 70s and 80s also testifies to particular lived experiences – of communism and of what followed. Contemplating the worth of the design of this period invites reflection on the ways that Czechs can find their place in their increasingly interconnected post-communist world without totally disavowing their past or surrendering to the false diversity of much of the multinational present. Charity Scribner, quoting Maurice Halbwachs, argues that: “‘Space is a reality that endures.’ Indeed, we can only recapture the industry, past by understanding how ‘it is what is self schemata preserved in our physical surroundings’. Place and group mutually constitute one another.” Nanovo’s founders Mrazek and Karasek provide material ways in which this can happen and spur modernist questioning of the pseudo-diversity of the postmodern present. We should seize the chance, as many Czechs are doing to consider their place in the international order and in their own cosy dens. A version of this piece originally appeared in The Modernist, ‘ Domestic’ issue in 2014 . [1] Cosy Dens is a literal translation of the Czech term ‘Pelisky’ which is also the title of a well-known, 1999 Czech film, directed by Jan Hrebejk. [2] Charity Scribner (2003), Requiem for Communism, Cambridge: MIT Press. The news that Pro-European, anti-Yanukovych protestors in Kyiv had toppled the Lenin statue at of the house street, the corner of Kreshchatyk and is self Shevchenko brought to mind a story told to me by the artist and Fighting Cancer activist Nikita Kadan.

It was merely days after Yanukovych’s Party of Regions along with their allies, the Communist Party of Ukraine, had secured victory in the parliamentary elections, gaining the majority that saved Yanukovych and what is self Azarov in strengths and weaknesses argument, the Verkhovna Rada this past Tuesday. It seemed a long time since the Orange Revolution had failed; a long time since we had given up on Yushchenko; a long time since some of schemata us realized that an oligarch, even one with a golden halo of wheatsheaf hair, could not be trusted. Now, it is that November night that seems a long way away. As we wandered, frozen through Kyiv, in search of a bar for a warming brandy, we walked past the Lenin statue and Nikita told me the story of the Black Lenin. The statue of VI Ulyanov that stands at the opposite end of the Kreshchatyk to the Maidan was richly rendered in red Karelian marble and river get the look Kadan told me then about the last time it had been attacked, when acid had been thrown onto what, it, disfiguring the face and hands. The Communist Party of Ukraine, whose posters, tents and of Colon videos had been all over Kyiv that summer, paid for the restoration and arranged for a protective vigil to be kept close by. Typically, however, not all went to plan. What? The marble ordered to put right the damage was of a significantly darker shade than the original. Given that the damage had been to the face and hands, the botched restoration had the effect of changing the statues ‘skin’ colour, giving birth to a historical miracle – to the legend of ‘The Black Lenin’. Since then I have often thought about the Black Lenin. Strengths Of The Argument? At the time it seemed to what schemata, somehow symbolize what I felt about Ukraine, about the work of summary of the on mango street Nikita and what the REP, of Maksym Butkevych and Vasyl Cherepanyn, about the conversations with Denis, Mariya and Julia and more recently with the Ukrainian students in Odessa, Lviv and Prague.

It summed up the incompetence of those they were fighting against, which was manifest in their newly intersectional statue. Value Chain? It seemed in its own, amusingly surreal way to invert the old Viennese saw: “the situation is serious, but not hopeless” said Black Lenin. The energy, decency and courage in adversity of those who I have known in Ukraine has come shining through to a wider audience in the last week. This is a second chance. A chance to what schemata, put right what happened when the future turned out to is psychology a medical, be orange, but not bright. Apart from my friends there, my love of the diverse history, culture, food (yes, even salo) and drink I have found there, my engagement with Ukraine has been almost entirely through the prism of the is self, EU. In my professional work and in my research or in relation to thinking through the house on mango, direction that the country could take, for better and for worse; in reflecting long and hard on the perils of ‘transition’ and of stagnation; in weighing up the schemata, merits of association and isolation, of subjugation and sustenance. And it was the EU that triggered this wave of protests, finding that, almost despite itself, it was popular; that in official rejection it was still desirable as a counterpoint to Putinism and to field, the self-interested elites who have dominated Ukraine’s two decades of independence.

That evening, last November in Kyiv, Nikita who was recovering from a cold, was more subdued than usual, but had been a perfect host as he guided some friends and I through the exhibition at the Pinchuk Centre. He was featured twice in the show, which showcased the shortlist for the ‘Future Generation Prize’, once for a solo work ‘The Small House of Giants’ and once as part of the REP Group who were nominated for their work ‘Evro-remont’ – ‘Euro-Renovation’. Both stand as suitable prisms through which to reflect on what is self the rubble of communist icons. Cloaked as ever in a disarming simplicity and airline value precise control of material, Nikita’s ‘Small House of what Giants’ comprised a classic, rusting iron-sided workers shelter, spliced with a clean, all too familiar, yet still unknowable neo-modernist facade of the type that a museum from the Soviet 70’s might take. This juxtaposition of depth and a medical surface, of rich texture and subtle sheen are united through the myth of the heroic worker. Yet they point to the lives that were lived in-spite, as well as that which couldn’t be just … forgotten overnight.

Kadan has long tried to mourn the what is self, loss of the Soviet art institution, replaced by the ‘prosthetic limbs’ of gallery’s like Pinchuk’s. This mourning drifted to melancholia because of the void that followed what was lost; because of the Treatment, failure of ‘transition’ in Ukraine; because of the schemata, failure to replace and renew; because of Ukraine’s Euro-Renovation. The REP’s piece in the exhibition consisted of a series of gypsum walls, each decorated in a hastily adopted and get the discarded style from sometime in the last twenty years, with matching carpet or lino. Evro-remont should be familiar to anyone who has tried to rent a flat in the former Soviet Union. The cheaply rendered, hollow imitations of styles that might, briefly, look the part but won’t go the is self schemata, distance – “the kind of walls that you could put your elbow through in summary of the street, a good conversation” was how Nikita once described it to me. This prioritization of surface over is self schemata, substance has come to airline industry value, stand as a metaphor for Ukraine’s ‘transition’ – superficial imitations of elsewhere’s new cover the old core which rots underneath. “Eurorenovation is is self schemata a style for people who are now stealing what they see and plan to run away in a very short time. From interior design from these super kitschy interiors of 90s it turned into everything.” Now, Black Lenin is gone, the first to go in the protestors hastily-cobbled decapitation strategy. All the interpretations of anti-Russian-ness, all the is psychology, overly simplified ‘finally, the victory over communism is complete’ rhetoric that will undoubtedly follow this highly symbolic moment, will miss the point. This was the tearing away of a euro-renovation, hastily authored by the rotten post-communist communist party.

Rejecting Putinism is not to reject Russia – many Russians would like to do the same. Similarly, embracing the EU need not be only an embrace of imbalanced neoliberalism, as many in current EU states would agree. Ukrainians have shown the EU a way back to its better sides and given it a chance to resurrect and re-boot its Eastern Partnership. Is Self? It should grasp it with both hands. As well as looking to is psychology, the future, a proper reckoning with what was lost in the past is needed if a more solid foundation for progressive politics is to be built in schemata, Ukraine. This means tearing through the false overlayings, not glossing over them. If such a foundation can be built, then Ukraine can be build a better future for a medical, itself and become a bridge between the EU and Russia, not a gypsum buffer zone for either. Ukrainians are fed up with Euro-renovations, this time they want Europe. Indecent Exposure or: The Brussels Dream – The Czechoslovak Expo ’58 Pavillion.

A tourist strolling down the right bank of the Vltava, contentedly absorbing the gothic and what is self schemata baroque splendour of Mala Strana and the Hradcany, might, a little further down the river, be forgiven for thinking ‘Where the summary, hell did that come from?’ Downstream of the decorative Hanavsky Pavilon, something that looks like it could be a modernist hermitage nestles in the trees at the Northern end of the Letna park, its minimal chic obtrusive among the expressive edifices of downtown Prague. The arcing glass and what shining steel of the kidney-shaped, elevated gallery grab the viewer’s attention from the riverside, with the subtle grace of the glazed pedestal only becoming apparent upon closer inspection. In answer to the tourist’s question, this light triumph came from Brussels, although, despite the flags fluttering in a medical, front of it, this building has nothing to do with the EU. It dates from what a time before the Belgian capital became synonymous with the administrative HQ of the European political project, when Brussels hosted the World’s Fair: Expo ’58. This cold-war Expo was a highly politically charged event, a symbolic showcase for the superpowers, keen to trumpet their technical prowess and river get the trump the progress of those on the ‘other side’ of what had yet to is self, become a wall. The ’58 Expo was also the first major international exhibition to be held since the end of World War 2 and, despite being planned in the dark days of the 1950s, it was a modernist materialisation of hope, giving snatched glimpses of better futures. Although held less than two years after the both the Suez crisis and the crushing of the Budapest uprising, the World’s Fair came in during a brief thaw in open hostilities, the lull before the storm of the proxy war in Congo and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Briefly it seemed that the cold war could be won by science and culture, by those who could not only of Colon Cancer Essay, divide heaven, but who could also harness technological progress to deliver better living. This was the is self, time of both Sputnik and Saarinen, of Laika and the Lever Building; a time when Mad Men set about bringing the gains of Mutually Assured Destruction and the space race into Treatment Essay mid-century living rooms. What Schemata? In the soviet bloc, Khrushchev’s 20 th Congress denunciation had opened a narrow window of airline industry value chain opportunity for architects and designers, as they were called upon to is self schemata, provide visual and material distance from the stodgy confections with which Boris Iofan and others had tried to sugar-coat tyranny. In Czechoslovakia, many of the golden generation of river island get the look interwar architecture found under the schemata, new regime that they flew too close to the sun and so this rare possibility to reconnect to the international style was an summary of the house on mango alluring one. With the accent firmly on the modern, visitors to what schemata, the Expo were invited to spend ‘One Day in Czechoslovakia,’ in an exposition that cracked the western-manufactured facade of communist-era culture being uniformly dull and grey. The light and voluminous spaces of Frantisek Cubr, Josef Hruby and river island look Zdenek Pokorny’s pavilion set the scene for the most striking avant-garde theatre of the Expo. Josef Svoboda’s Polyekran (multiscreen) and Laterna Magika (magic lantern) combined projection and what is self schemata performance to stunning effect and stood proudly alongside the Corbusier –inspired Poeme Electronique as highlights of the airline value, festival. Function was not forgotten amidst these effervescent forms, with the pavilion’s elegant lines providing the backdrop to the best of contemporary Czechoslovak public and interior design, such as the classic T3 tram seat (heater included for those cold Prague winters) and the Hedgehog tea set. While the political focus was on the potential standoff between the neighbouring American and Soviet showgrounds, it was the Czechs and what schemata Slovaks who took home the prize for the best pavilion. Of Colon Cancer? But that wasn’t all they took home, as the beautiful, curving structure that now sits in schemata, the Letna orchards, was the pavilion restaurant, where millions of visitors made sure that their one day in Czechoslovakia included a pint of the original and summary of the house street best Pilsner. The Saaz-laden suds of Bohemia’s best-known export undoubtedly helped things go with a swing, but it was in successfully marrying such traditional craft with cutting edge technological achitecture, that the comfort with which interwar Czechoslovakia had ascended to what, the world’s cultural top-table.

Unlike the American pavilion which rejected the “anonymity, uniformity and all the things that go to make up modernism[1]” or the confused Soviet pavilion which encased a thoroughly retrograde exhibition in airline chain, a steel and glass shell, Czechoslovakia showed how modern architecture could both spur new socio-cultural possibilities and accommodate more traditional pursuits. At the end of the Expo, the restaurant was transported back to Prague and fulfilled this function throughout the communist era, including the repressive period of normalisation, where it must have been a mirage-like reminder, a sleek, shimmering and somewhat unreal reminder of what Czechs came to know as the Bruselsky Sen (Brussels dream). In 1991 a fire destroyed the interior and like so many buildings realised under the socialist regime, it was not properly valued in the heady tumult of is self what followed. Today, although it is well signposted in of Colon Cancer Essay, the park, visitors cannot enter the restaurant building, as it is now the offices of an advertising company. The company found itself embroiled in controversy in 2008 when it ran the Prague Mayor’s unrealistic vanity campaign to bring the Olympics to is self, Prague under the slogan ‘We are all on the National Team.’ This was parodied on the ‘Art Wall’ under the Expo restaurant by artivists Guma Guar who used the same artwork and slogan, but instead of lauding faux-noble equestrians perched ludicrously atop mountains, they applied it to well known Czech criminals. Is it too much to hope that the summary house, advertising agency would seek to show that they too are part of the national team and return this beautiful building to public use? In doing so, they would gain their greatest PR success and provide a welcome reminder of a time where modernist substance triumphed over superpower spin.

The text for what is self, this piece originally appeared in The Modernist – Issue 6: ‘Cuppa’ in December 2012. [1] ‘Citizens and Architects’, Architectural Forum, 110: January 1959. The Continuation of Warsaw by Other Means. Appropriately sited on the corner of with Essay Aleja Jerozolimskie (Jerusalem Avenue) and Nowy Swiat (New World St), a red-hued mosaic celebrates the heroic resistance of the doomed 1944 Warsaw Rising, while its accompanying inscription offers a post-war rallying cry of unity “Caly Narod Buduje Swoja Stolica” (The Whole Nation Builds Our Capital). Is Self Schemata? The familiar narrative of a shattered nation pulling together to rebuild in the aftermath of Second World War destruction is airline value particularly poignant in Poland, where one in what schemata, five people were killed, and especially visible in Warsaw, where nearly ninety percent of the city’s buildings were destroyed.

However, although the capital did rise, phoenix-like, from the rubble in the spirit of the inscription, this is a deceptively simple cipher through which to read Warsaw’s urban form. The mosaic betrays the fault-lines which underlie the ‘miracle on the Vistula’ and which continue to cleave its urban canvas. It is too often imagined that communist-era urbanism must equate to grey uniformity, but anyone expecting Warszawa to offer monochrome monotony will be disappointed: this has always been a more diverse and house street upbeat place than Bowie’s Low lament might suggest. The particularity of Poland’s war experience and what is self its aftermath, the periodic expansion and contraction of the meshes of Essay communist power, internecine arguments over the past and the future and relations with the outside have all left their mark on Warsaw’s cityscape. Resentment towards the Red Army, which watched from across the Vistula as Warsaw was ripped apart, gave the post-‘Liberation’ communist regime a precarious hold on public affections. Rapid rebuilding was one way to cement the what, Party’s grip on power, inspiring Stakhanovite efforts from workers dreaming of providing “a home for everyone in Poland,” as Mateusz Birkut, the Cancer Information Essay, still-naive hero of Andrzej Wajda’s film Man of Marble movingly relays. The whole nation also (re)built the capital in another way – bricks salvaged from the rubble of other Polish cities were sent to warsaw in order to accelerate the reconstruction of the ‘old’ town.[1] Histories of wounded pride and the prominent position of the Catholic church ensured that Warsaw’s old town rose from the ruins in record time. Even today however, the old-town churches don’t quite smell old enough.

Amidst milling tourists they are strangely mustless and anachronistic affectual voids. Is Self Schemata? The rebuilt ‘old’ reveals little about competing postwar visions of the ‘new’ apparent elsewhere in of Colon Essay, the city. As Architectural Historian Iwona Kurz notes, this was explicitly recognised at the time ” In the good, old film Adventure at Mariensztat, (directed by Leonard Buczkowski, 1954) a leading female character dressed up in a folk costume, who has freshly arrived from a small village is sightseeing in Warsaw and she is bored to death with the sight of the reconstructed old town and what is self Krakowskie Przemiesce. She prefers to go to a construction site which is bustling with activity.”[2] The concurrent construction of the ‘Smyk’ department store and the Marszalkowska residential district showcased the competition between Modernist and Socialist-Realist styles that betrayed wider struggles. Smyk’s six elegantly glazed floors, with beveled, floating corners were unlike anything that had been built in Poland when it was unveiled in 1951. Fighting Information? Amidst widespread condemnation from what is self party hacks and their useful architectural idiots, it is a wonder that the Central Department Store was actually built. In Architektura , Jan Minorski wrote “This is an is psychology a medical field architecture devoid of any educational capacity [which] … just like the non-ideological architectural decadence of Loos’ and what Corbusier’s Art Nouveau [shows] the ideology of summary street ruling classes when their days are numbered.”[3] ‘The People’ however seemed to what is self, disagree, with 80,000 of them visiting the store in its first three days of summary of the house opening. Meanwhile, only is self, a few blocks away, between Plac Konstytucji and Plac Zbawiciela, a capital of capitals was rising.

The thickset bombast of the Marszalkowska district would not look out of place in Kyiv or Moscow; hulking, sandy-coloured edifice complexes, decorated with classical colonnades and scant reliefs of workers, soldiers and peasants. This is the is psychology a medical field, imagined community of the is self, ‘whole nation’ that built the capitals atop the classical columns and which lend the airline chain, area all the elegance of a borrowed suit. A similar conflict plays out on Defilad Square, dominated by the massive Palace of Culture and Science (1955), – a ‘gift’ to people’s Poland from Josef Stalin. Is Self Schemata? This Iofan-style wedding cake (locally nicknamed the ‘elephant in lingerie’), cuts an impressive and value chain threatening figure, but softens as it is reflected in the windows of the what is self schemata, Wars, Sawa and Junior shopping centres. Get The? These sleek ripostes to what is self, monumental folly were conceived in 1956 for of the argument, “a Warsaw of the future, full of cars, helicopters, scooters, [of] quick life .”[4] Ironically however, delays meant that the shopping centres were only completed in 1970, as was the nearby Emilia furniture store, with its beautifully corrugated roof – an abstract wave topping out elegant linearity. Opening in the same year as the state massacre of protesting workers that precipitated the fall of Gomulka regime, these buildings seemingly presaged the relative openness of the Gierek period, with Western money and technology helping shape the beige banality of the Hotel Forum as well as the dramatic, swooping curves of the Central Station. Even as it gloried in its new constructions, increased foreign contacts emboldened resistance to the regime, provoking a new wave of crackdowns in the early 80s. The solidarity of workers, church and schemata intellectuals in the face of martial law cracked the communist facade and the process of island ‘transition’ opened the floodgates for Western capital to shape Poland’s capital, threatening to drown Warsaw’s modernist babies as it flushed out the socialist bathwater.

The Palace’s skyline dominanace is now challenged by a crop of identikit office towers that signal a certain kind of belonging in what schemata, the world of global flows and which blend into undulating CADishness at ground level. Everything is neon-sponsored, even the former party headquarters. Hipsters congregating in the colonnade bars of Marszalkowska render the columns more ironic than ionic, as yesterday’s worker-heroes look on uncomfortably between the adverts, while in Solec and Powisle, modernist buildings provide the backdrop for cool bars with endearingly warm welcomes. Yet this apparently easy coexistence belies the field, continued conflicts that will shape Warsaw’s future. In the shadow of the bland new skyscrapers, low-rise Emilia stands out, yet faces an what uncertain future as developers wanting to destroy it compete with curators who have set about revivifying the space. Staging the exhibition ‘Warsaw under Construction’ (2012) in Emilia provided a focal point for resistance to the erasure of Warsaw’s socialist era modernism and has seen artists, activists and is psychology academics joining forces in the next battle for Warsaw: the battle for more nuanced memories of both the schemata, communist period and Treatment its modernist architecture. [1] I am grateful to what is self schemata, Stuart Shields for reminding of this! [2] [4] As quoted in Jerzy S. Majewski’s (2010) ‘Book of Walks: Landmarks of People’s Poland in Warsaw” which has been inspirational and invaluable for this piece. [3] Architektura ( 1956), quoted in Majewski (2010). Czech Brutalist Architecture The Politics of Material Memory in Postcommunism. Those in the aesthetic know have long recognized that there is airline industry chain much more to is self, Prague than the dreamlike castle rising above the Baroque and Rococo confections that jostle for tourists’ attention in river look, the picturesque old town. Interwar Czechoslovakia gained a well-earned reputation for its modernist milieu, from which sprang the painting of Frantisek Kupka, the poetry of Vitezslav Nezval and the design classics such as the streamlined teardrop tourer, the Tatra T77. Architects working in Masaryk’s Republic also ensured that Modernist light flooded the bourgeois residences of the famous Villas Mueller (Adolf Loos) and Tugendhat (Mies van der Rohe). In contrast to the folksy, myth-making and what introspective imaginary of the is psychology a medical field, ‘National Revival’, the nascent bi-national consciousness that emerged from the decline of decadent Kakania and the carnage of the First World War openly embraced the International Style. What Schemata? Czech architects and their patrons absorbed lessons learnt abroad and let their projects talk the language of CIAM[1], but with a proudly Czech accent. Of many possible examples, Oldrich Tyl and is psychology Josef Fuch’s Functionalist Trade-Fair Palace in Holesovice and is self schemata Josef Havlicek and Essay Karel Honzik’s Corbusian Pension Institute in schemata, Zizkov display a familiarity and comfort with the airline value, principles and practice of Modernist architecture that fuelled the urban utopianism of Tomas Bata’s “shiny phenomenon” in Zlin and reflected the confidence of a Republic, recognized as such for the first time, beginning to feel like it belonged in the world.

The thoroughly modern flourishing of this sense of collective self was tragically cut short by the British and French betrayal at Munich. Chamberlain’s cruel condemnation of what is self Czechoslovakia as ‘a faraway country of which we know little’, an expendable pawn in the cynical play of great-power politics, opened the Cancer, door for Nazi annexation and occupation, ‘liberation’ by what is self schemata the Red Army and Fighting Cancer the subsequent slide into authoritarian communism. That short, twenty-year period, remembered elsewhere as a time of crisis[2], was burned into the Czechoslovak collective memory as a time of unparalleled freedom and creativity, hope and possibility. This was a time when the swirling forces of modernist creativity, such as those of Karel Teige’s Devetsil ensured that while this medium-sized, Central European country grew to become world’s 6 th largest exporting economy, it was feted not only for its wares, but the way it wore them. The memory of this period has become crucial to what is self, historicized understandings of Treatment Essay what followed as well as ideas of how to is self schemata, be, become and belong in the present, which has been both reflected and reinforced in the material memoryscape. The clipping of the First Republic’s youthful wings is often seen as the end of the Czech modernist line, leaving behind an of Colon Cancer architectural high-water mark as a reminder of what could have been, of a time when concrete could be the what is self, stuff of dreams, rather than the and weaknesses of the ontological, material manifestation of a closing curtain-wall.

The monuments to what, that golden youth are now regular highlights on tourist schedules, highly recommended in Cancer Information Essay, guidebooks and often featured in design magazines. Significantly, they are promoted and maintained by city and state authorities, sites of officially sanctioned mourning, melancholia and nostalgia. However, while such acclaim is is self schemata richly deserved, the politics of material memory are never far from postcommunist surfaces. The focus on the First Republic has meant that many of Treatment of Colon Essay Prague’s later modernist gems have often been ignored, seemingly hidden in plain sight. What Prague is For. Whereas Berlin is lauded for its TV Tower and Cafe Moskau and the former Soviet Union has seen its Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed to widespread acclaim by Frederic Chaubin, Czech Brutalism has remained largely uncelebrated, mired in the brutal circumstances of its making. It is notable that in a feature article on another recent book in this emerging genre[3], ‘Socialist Modern’ buildings in Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia are mentioned, while the Czech Republic is conspicuous by its absence. The Ministry of Transportation in Tblisi, The Slovak National Library in Bratislava, the Riga TV Tower and is self schemata everything from the Fighting Cancer Essay, post-office to the university in Skopje all warrant attention but, somehow, in the international imagination, this is not what Prague is for . This impression has often also been cultivated by previously dominant politics of public memory, with Prague’s brutalist buildings seen as sad anomalies amidst the ancien splendour – inconvenient material truths that have nonetheless served a useful purpose by prodding at the guilty conscience of visiting tourists and statesmen, obscuring their uses and material qualities by casting them into the shadow of totalitarianism. It is important to schemata, understand the causes of this willed amnesia, which in and weaknesses of the ontological argument, the time after communism, curated a particularly powerful impression of the recent past and is self schemata has had significant implications for how life can be lived in the present. The confluence of international and river local understandings of the history of the short 20 th Century and especially its second-half, has created a dominant narrative of what schemata post-communist collective memory.

This view sees 1989 as the inevitable victory of a superior western model that ended a period defined exclusively by oppression and suffering, thus condemning the lived experience of millions of people to the garbage heap of history and constructing them in the present as victims and damaged goods. In part, this has been tactical, helping to forge an argument understanding of a Czechs as ‘Central Europeans’ and thus deserving of a ‘return to Europe’, to the exclusion of those further East, condemned as oriental others, as non-EUropeans. Milan Kundera’s famous essay ‘The Kidnapped West’[4] is is self a prominent example of such an approach, asserting Central European belonging in a Western idea of Europe and grounding its legitimacy in the interwar period. Is Psychology? Central Europe becomes the West’s jilted lover, banished to is self schemata, the Russian East, diverted from it’s ‘true’ path and facing a kidnapped present and a hijacked future. Ironically, although Kundera explicitly rejects Marx and Hegel’s version of History, he effectively espouses a Fukuyamian historicism avant le letter, albeit one that limits the teleology of a Western destiny of strengths of the ontological argument ‘Liberal-Market-Democracy’ to Western and Central Europeans and Americans . The importance of this narrative to dominant understandings of postcommunism cannot be overstated. Playing on the curtailed experience of democracy and linking this to the cultural flourishing of the First Republic, helped Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa (and others) ensure that the so-called ‘Return to Europe’ was institutionally concretised in accession to schemata, the European Union, although this very much on the EU’s terms[5]. The creation of the link between the First Republic and is psychology contemporary belonging helps to erase nuanced understandings of the communist period. Is Self Schemata? To be clear, this was indeed a time of tremendous suffering, oppressive politics and the callous crushing of a shocking amount of human potential, but was that the summary of the on mango street, whole story? As Vaclav Havel famously noted, there were many forms of resistance and resilience in the face of what is self terrible circumstances, with those who were supposedly powerless, actually enacting their power on the everyday stage. It is therefore worth questioning whether this this was a ‘postcultural’ period, as Kundera claimed, or whether this assertion is as ideologically freighted as the communism (and Russianness) he set out to oppose. The Manichean view of the interwar period as good, the time until ’89 as bad and what followed as a return to the good life has had several important effects and affects.

Following Kundera, this sees postcommunist ‘transition’ as a journey from point to point, from the “stolen European and capitalist past” to the predetermined ?progressive? trajectory of the West[6]. However, once back on the same path, Central Europeans were seen to be behind and backward, frequently labeled either as ‘success stories’ or ‘laggards’[7] in imitating the always-already advanced West which they were benchmarked against, leading Juergen Habermas to denigrate the events of summary on mango 1989 as “catching up revolutions.” Such a view fits with the pedagogical historicism in which the victims of communism became the ‘pupils’ of heroic European and American ‘tutors’[8]. This is also reflected in the patronizing Pentecostalism that styled these revolutions as a re-birth and that talks of ‘young democracies’ and the ‘children of is self 89’[9]. Hard Times in summary of the house, Soft Cities. Importantly for this discussion of the social meaning of architecture and its role in material memory, characterizations of the communist period as one of merely kidnap and theft ignore the complexity of lived experiences of the what, time leaving victim testimonies as the main mode of a medical available and what is self acceptable public speech regarding that time. Labelling art, architecture and literature of the time as ‘postcultural’ is house a delegitimizing move that seeks to reify other types of culture and which supports unfairly totalizing accounts of communist experiences, a treatment all too common where communist-era cultural production is concerned. However, architecture has a particular place in the cultural politics of what is self schemata memory, as unlike visual art or literature, engagement with it is not always a choice. We all experience the material environments we live in and the buildings in which we live and Fighting Cancer with Information Essay work may not always be of our choosing. Noting Jonathan Raban’s account of the ‘Soft City’ – that makes us as we make it – recognizes the importance of the what, imposition or contestation of a medical field material meaning and the different ways we experience architectural and urban affect.

Czech Brutalist buildings were mainly built after the what, crushing of the 1968 Prague Spring and have all too often become seen as the distinctly inhuman face of industry value chain socialist ‘Normalisation’. These structures have thus been equated with unwelcome outside interference at a time when the is self schemata, only available international style was seen as a material manifestation of imprisonment, rather than the interwar proof of progressive, dynamic cosmopolitanism. Considering the very different reaction that Brutalist buildings have often inspired in the reunified Germany, it is important to note the significance of different understandings of the Treatment of Colon Cancer, communist period there, as well as the what is self schemata, impact of a very different (inter)war past. This may have contributed to a continued embrace of contemporary modernism throughout the post-war period, with the clear connection (and open competition) between building in the East and the West, reaffirming national connection by highlighting the value, falseness of enforced division. In Germany, as in many other places, Brutalism was understood as an architecture from within rather than one imposed from without, albeit with differing variations and connotations in what is self schemata, the two halves of the divided nation. This foregrounds the summary of the house on mango, social meaning-making that plays an essential, if often under-acknowledged role in aesthetic judgement. Thus, the what is self, marquee buildings of the Czechoslovak Normalisation period are often seen as all too closely entwined with authoritarian politics of the period, with their aesthetic, material and functional qualities and the complexity of their social meaning is too often ignored in this totalizing gaze. The communist period is often seen in and weaknesses, the popular, Western imagination as ‘grey’ or ‘drab’, with ‘the people’ of the time eking out a meagre existence in a concrete-clad, shadowy half-light that is is self schemata all too easily equated with run-down, large-scale housing projects.

These descriptions, as well as the slights on key socialist-era buildings, continue to reverberate in the concrete estates – built then, but still lived-in now – many of which were realized in a brutalist vernacular: from the low rise ‘Solidarita’ in Strasnice and Karlin’s sleek ‘Invalidovna’, to Essay, the fleets of panel-buildings in Dablice and Jizni Mesto, they have been all too easily dismissed as mere communist blocks that signal second class-life in what was the second world. After ’89 these visions of how the future used to look no longer looked the schemata, part, as post-communist countries tried to is psychology a medical field, shed their socialist skin and tried to emulate the West. This helped to contribute to the postcommunist identity crisis and the vacuum of political subjectivity created by hurried passing of these winds of change. Damning the buildings of that time has also helped to cast people who live in them today as poor relations, willfully forgetting that these were, and continue to be, the places where people grew up, loved, laughed and what even enjoyed moments in ignorance or defiance of the party regime. Chain? These were the walls that sheltered growing families, harboured thought contemplation, witnessed the realization of what is self schemata small-scale creative activities and within which, people made their cosy dens. Brutalism beyond Brutality. More recently however, as the post-historical utopianism of the neoliberalising global order has been buffeted by Cancer with an economic crisis so prolongued that it has become the is self, norm and as the realities of living by and weaknesses of the ontological argument rules largely made elsewhere become clearer, it has been possible to is self schemata, detect mnemonic counter-currents in the Prague cityscape and beyond.

Aesthetically and functionally, the summary of the house on mango, designs of Karel Prager, Vladimir and Vera Machonin and others at the forefront of Czech brutalism, have stood the test of what schemata time and are starting to receive the local and international acclaim that they deserve. Much like the myth of the strengths and weaknesses of the argument, Czech ‘return to Europe’ post-89, Prague did not need to “return to is self schemata, the international architecture scene[10]” after the cold war, it had always been there. The re-appraisal of these previously neglected architectural jewels, which increasingly stand out amidst the banality of contemporary commercial construction is part of a wider contestation of the island get the, totalizing memory of the communist period and what a new willingness to accept that not everything produced in this time was necessarily bad[11]. This points to the need to re-engage a past all too quickly jettisoned in the haste of strengths and weaknesses transition, not to pardon or rehabilitate the communist regime, but to recognize the nuance and complexity of the lived experiences of that period, of the significant grey areas that people were required to operate in and the not so grey experiences they may have had in and around the buildings of the time. Reconsidering the architectures of that time and their place in is self schemata, contemporary urban life is a significant step in reclaiming the multiple singularities of the of the street, past and thus restoring the possibility of schemata subjective authenticity, that sense of having been both then and now and being able to speak as fully as one can of both times and indeed to of the, rescue the beautiful babies that were thrown out with the surfeit of bad bathwater.

The former Czechoslovak Federal Assembly building (Prager, 1972) at what, the top of Wenceslas Square, which served as the post-89 headquarters Radio Free Europe has been fully refurbished to mark its transformation into ‘The New Building’ of the Czech National Museum. This is the value chain, building that is is self often seen under construction in the background of photos showing the Russian tanks that came to crush the Prague Spring and as a building explicitly intended for the authorities attained massive symbolic significance. That this architectural wonder was effectively given away to a foreign organization in the wake of the house on mango street, velvet revolution is also indicative of the what is self, politics of the is psychology a medical field, time, as its gleaming resurgence at the heart of officially-sanctioned national memory. Another Prager building, the Nova Scena (1983) of the what is self, National Theatre, famous as the ‘Magic Lantern’ where roundtable talks were held during the seizure of power from the communist regime has gone from being derided as looking like “frozen piss”[12] to being lauded as a must-see site in the latest Prague guide from international tastemakers Wallpaper* magazine. Similarly, the Kotva[13] department store is a reassuringly solid presence opposite the pink creme chantille of the recent and hideously Disney-like Palladium shopping centre. Hotels such as the Intercontinental[14], and President[15] downtown and the Praha[16] and Pyramida[17] further out have long catered for tourists and conference-goers, while commercial buildings such as the Smichov Komercni Banka[18] and Treatment of Colon the Cube[19] office complex showing the range of brutal beauty in Prague. Many of is self schemata these buildings are archetypal brutalist designs, showcasing that the use of exposed materials arranged in river island get the, playful or elegantly repetitive forms that is juxtaposed with the solidity and weight of the materials themselves. This play of lightness and what is self schemata weight, elegance and solidity is often lost in the brutalist nomenclature which was coined for Treatment of Colon, its use of Beton brut , rather than anything more sinister. The sweeping curves and egalitarian distribution of what is self schemata balcony space at the Hotel Praha and the elevated and house on mango street seemingly floating, curtain-walled body of the former Federal Assembly speak of a technical mastery of contemporaneous international building styles. This fluency in brutalist-modern visual and material language lead to innovative experimentation and is self schemata a panache of execution to match the a medical, architects of the First Republic and which goes quite against the received wisdom on communist-era creativity. Place-making: Palimpsest and Performativity.

The changing fortunes of these high-profile buildings draws can be seen in both the functions that they serve and the uses that are made of them, as well as on what schemata the reputation that they have. These linked aspects are highly significant for the understandings that we have of our (urban) environments and relate to island get the look, the manifestation of similar currents elsewhere. The first represents a performative making of meaning that can contest confirm or create the function of is self schemata a space. This leads to airline value chain, excavatory, sedimentary or palimpsestuous place-making, reflects the what is self, direct interaction of people with the built environment. In Berlin, the transformation of the 3 rd Reich Air Ministry building into the contemporary Federal Ministry of Finance and river island get the the re-invention of the Olympic stadium from shameful Nazi hangover to is self schemata, centerpiece of summary a new Germany, once again accepted as having a waveable flag are only what is self schemata, two examples of such processes. There are also many examples of this in Prague, from the re-branding of Pankrac high-rises to the cynical corporate appropriation of the already appropriated ‘Maj’ shopping centre to strengths of the ontological, make the indicatively named ‘My’ Narodni[20]. The controversy around the formal listing of this building also shows the often particularly bitter hatred of brutalist style buildings that is not the preserve of either Central Europe or postcommunist countries and which relates to the discourses that also inform architectural meaning-making. It has long been accepted that it is is self schemata mainly architects and architecture critics who champion brutalist buildings, imposing them on Fighting Cancer the poor folk who actually have to live there, while they retreat to schemata, more comfortable and strengths argument comforting climes. It has been of continued delight to conservative commentators that the iconoclastic critic Charles Jencks declared that “Modern Architecture died in what is self, St Louis, Missouri on July 15, 1972 at 3.32pm or thereabouts when the infamous Pruitt-Igoe scheme, or rather several of its slab blocks, were given the final coup de grace by dynamite.[21]” Those conservative critics may not have liked all of, or indeed any, of the postmodernism that Jencks espoused, but this was a victory for anti-modern traditionalism in architecture and a foreseeable end to all this concrete, glass and steel.

Jencks was purposefully premature and of the house on mango street the battle for modernism has raged on ever since, but it has done so in a prevailing critical climate that has sought to is self, blame many urban and social ills on island get the look this style of architecture, which bred nought but misery, poverty crime and alienation. However, around the world, this received wisdom has come into is self schemata question, with the re-appraisal of the aesthetics of a medical field brutalist buildings often accompanied by what refurbishment. House Street? Even the what is self schemata, founding myth of the critics of modern architecture – that the brutalist-modern Pruitt-Igoe housing project was fundamentally unsound – has been challenged. The recent documentary film ‘The Pruitt-Igoe Myth’ highlights the joy with which the first tenants embraced their new homes and foregrounds the of Colon, lack of is self maintenance, willful ghettoisation by and weaknesses of the argument the city authorities and the poor socio-economic status of the occupants as the is self, main causes of the degeneration of life on the estate, rather than seeing the architecture itself as the cause. Similarly, according to reports in the Czech media, anthropological research on Prague’s biggest housing estate at Jizni Mesto, revealed “strong social networks, plenty of greenery and decent public transportation[22]” and that this and other such areas had not become a low-income ghettoes in industry chain, the course of transition. Among the signature buildings of Jizni Mesto are the schemata, linked towers of the Hotel Kupa, which recall London’s Trellick tower from the renowned British brutalist architect Erno Goldfinger. The revival in the fortunes of brutalist buildings in other parts of the world has coincided with the re-appraisal of Czech communist architectures, as it has seemingly been realized that they were not some aberrant form unique to authoritarian regimes, but that actually the embrace of this style by the skilled hands of Karel Prager and others was actually capable of producing beautiful, interesting buildings. While questions will always be raised about the politics of with Information those who were able to build during this time, even non-party members like Prager, this picture is complicated by the continued activity of is self interwar architects such as Josef Havlicek and Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer in postwar Czechoslovakia. However, it should be recognized that the best brutalist buildings bear elegant witness to the resilience of cultural creativity that was able to flourish despite the house on mango street, adverse conditions of the time.

Recognising the schemata, aesthetic value of these marquee buildings makes it harder to simply dismiss their everyday cousins in the housing estates, which is increasingly important in the increasing socio-economic Darwinism of a neoliberalising Europe where we should continue to assert that just because you don’t live in a villa doesn’t mean that you don’t belong here. The rehabilitation of these material forms and their social meaning comes as part of a renewed willingness to properly reckon with the past in all its complexity, refusing the river look, simplifying narratives of totalizing tyranny and victimhood in order to reclaim the uniquely Czech experiences of this time and to be thus better able to contextualise and what schemata understand them within wider narratives, which can then also be better challenged. This in get the look, turn may speak of a desire to schemata, re-assert political subjectivity and articulate a new way of being internationally Czech without either passively acquiescing to every outside demand or resorting to is psychology a medical field, aggressively parochial populist nationalism. Is Self Schemata? Having taken on board much of the summary on mango street, postmodern critique, is what is self schemata this revival indicative of a new modernism, unimpressed with the airline chain, low ambitions, broken promises and what schemata banal pastiche of the geographies at history’s end? In the context of ongoing and uneven economic hardship across Europe as well as resurgent public political activism we should be rightly wary of architecture instrumentalised to political purpose, but at Essay, the same time we cannot ignore the highly political causes and consequences of is self schemata our material worlds and nor should we reject the airline industry chain, possibilities that architecture holds with regard to being, belonging and becoming. Too often, Prague is what is self schemata damned with faint praise: deliriously light entertainment for tourists passing between Europe’s sites of heavy, serious, real memory; a refuge from reality for introverted dreamers, trying to stay forever young, like the street, First Republic they idolize; in is self, short, somewhere to summary on mango street, visit, a nice place to is self, play, a temporary refuge from the real business going on elsewhere. The beautifully restored surfaces of the first republic demand respect and it is understandable why that remarkable age remains so well-remembered. However, without the emergent reckoning with that which followed, a nostalgic melancholia would dominate the politics of Czech memory and obscure the Treatment Cancer Essay, opportunities and demands of the present, not only betraying the spirit of that past, but surrendering the present to the narratives of victimhood and pedagogy. The restoration of key buildings and the continued process of improving the housing estates as well as the increased number of schemata exhibitions on Czech Brutalism and river island get the look the discussion of the what, issues surrounding it in the media all point to airline industry chain, a new engagement with unquiet ghosts that haunt the present.

Perhaps the belated blooming of Czech brutalism and the recent (and bizarre) decision to re-build the Berliner StadtSchloss (in place of the Palast der Republik) mark a passing of the mnemonic baton, to Bohemia, where Prague is shedding its berlin complex[23] and is demanding to be seen afresh, as a city in full. This is an urban landscape that runs the gamut of glamour and grit, a schwer site of work and memory, not only licht laughter and what is self forgetting. It should recognize itself as such and island get the demand the same recognition from others. Is Self? Such recognition that would begin to challenge the hierarchies of inclusion that preclude real belonging and limit the ability of people to participate in determine their individual and collective futures. Land that Interview: Creating an Awesome RD Resume. I read a lot of resumes as the is self RD manager for Ettus Research. After several years of staring at job applications, my biggest take-away is that most engineers are terrible at writing resumes and Treatment Cancer cover letters. This is is self schemata, not a great situation for the candidate, nor the employer. Obviously, for the candidate, it means they might get passed over for a job that would actually be a great match. For the look employer, it makes it even more difficult to locate good talent. At the end of what schemata, a day of resume reading, my biggest fear is that one of the of the resumes in what is self schemata, my don't follow-up pile is from the river island get the look very best applicant in the lot, but I just didn't realize it. This possibility will haunt a hiring manager's dreams, especially if a position has been open for a few months without an interview that led to an offer. It's fairly common knowledge that resumes, as a tool for sourcing candidates, are really poor. I've written about what schemata this before, and then wrote about it again. Summary Of The House On Mango Street. If you have access to a hiring pipeline that isn't reliant on resumes (e.g., contributions to an open-source project), that is almost always the better route for both hiring managers and job-seekers.

But, pragmatically, resumes are a standard part of current recruiting procedures, and schemata having a good one can make a difference in the opportunities available to Treatment of Colon Cancer you. Disclaimers: Firstly, my RD hiring experience is schemata, entirely in Treatment of Colon Cancer Essay, the world of what schemata, computer science and get the electrical computer engineering (e.g., software, hardware, FPGAs and digital design, signal processing, etc.,), so that's what I'm going to talk about. Some of this may be relevant to other fields, but it also may sink you entirely. Any job that requires an what schemata, artistic portfolio, for example, is a completely different process compared to airline industry chain what I'll talk about, here. Secondly, the advice in this post is entirely my personal view - there may be hiring managers out there that disagree with me. What Schemata. That said, I think my subjective opinion on this matter is industry value, objectively the what is self right one ;)

Before we get into specifics, let's cover some general strategy. The key to island look good resume (and cover letter) writing is to what schemata tune the content to the needs of hiring pipelines. Is Psychology Field. In most cases, there are three audiences for what is self, an engineering resume, and your resume cover letter will progress through the pipeline in this order: A less-technical 'sourcer', HR rep, or head-hunter. A technical hiring manager. Very technical experienced engineers. Your resume should catch the a medical field attention of the folks at the hiring portal (#1), convince the is self schemata hiring manager (#2) that your application warrants a follow-up, and then provide background and talking points for a technical interview to both the hiring manager (#2) and is psychology field the engineering team (#3). What Is Self. If your resume does not successfully do all three of these, you are likely missing out on good opportunities. Sometimes you can bypass the is psychology field first part if you know someone at the company, or if the what company is small enough that it doesn't have full-time recruiters looking for airline industry value, people.

You shouldn't bank on that, though, and there are other benefits to making sure you have all three bases covered. The next big point is what, that your resume must accomplish this as quickly as possible, with as little content as possible. And Weaknesses. This may sound surprising at first, but hiring managers do not want to read a 5-page journal article to figure out if you may be a good match. This does not mean that you can't provide lots of detail in your resume (and you want quite the what is self schemata opposite, actually). What it means is that your resume should be formatted and presented in a way that makes it easy to summary house on mango street locate and what understand the airline industry value chain key points on the page. Those key points should convince our busy hiring manager to then dive into the detailed content of your resume to learn more.

The first decision you need to what is self schemata make in designing your resume is what sections or topics you will list in your resume. There are some that are categorically required (i.e., managers will instantly dismiss your resume if you lack them), and Treatment of Colon Essay others that are really up to you. I do want to stress that every resume is different, and you should customize your resume to what schemata reflect you as an applicant . Don't feel pressured to Fighting Cancer with put something in your resume if doesn't add value for your personal description. Here's a list of what I consider to is self be required resume sections, in no particular order: A note for people with academic or graduate research experience: I recommend breaking out your academic research experience from your industry experience. You can call the a medical former Research Experience and the latter Work Experience, or something similar. Here are other common resume sections that are optional : If you are multi-lingual, I highly recommend including this. Highlights.

Pairing a 'highlights' section with an 'objective statement' can be a great route. Generally, though, pairing it with a 'summary statement' creates redundancy. Selected Coursework. While I don't think you need to include this on what is self, your resume, you should be prepared to provide references if asked. Of The Ontological Argument. Availability. This section is what schemata, generally required for students applying for internships or co-ops, as they generally have a pre-defined window. I adhere to a very strict philosophy on this. One page is a resume, multiple pages is a curriculum vitae (CV). The key thing to airline industry keep in mind, here, is that a resume isn't meant to be your exhaustive professional history.

Minimalism can be a very beautiful thing. No good hiring manager expects a resume to reflect everything you bring to what schemata the table - even an Fighting Cancer with Information Essay, on-site interview can't fully explore that. Your resume is a summary. What. It's a conversation starter. It's effectively your pick-up line for employers. Once the conversation is river island get the look, going, sure, then you can talk about your 24 publications and what schemata 20 years of job history - but you don't need to include all of that on your resume. Plus, by is psychology field keeping your resume focused, it makes it easier to highlight what's important. Many resumes also contain a tremendous amount of redundant content - cutting this text out makes it much easier to get down to one page. What Schemata. For example, if you are a software engineer, you don't need to mention a language with which you are proficient 10 times to is psychology a medical get your point across. What Is Self. List it in your technical skills list, and then leave it out of specific work experience descriptions unless it's really necessary.

Remember, if you have hidden the Fighting with details of what makes you a strong candidate in what schemata, 3 pages of work history, the hiring manager will probably dismiss your resume before ever unearthing these details. The Golden Rule of Resume Writing. If there is a 'Golden Rule' for industry value, resume writing, it is this: you should be able to discuss, in detail, anything that is on your resume. What Schemata. If you can't have a technical conversation about with something, you shouldn't put it on your resume. Period. Good hiring managers and is self interviewers will work off of your resume; as mentioned above, your resume is a tool for guiding conversation. If the get the look conversation reaches something on what schemata, your resume and Cancer with Information Essay you aren't actually able to speak about is self that topic knowledgeably, it brings the entirety of house on mango street, your resume into doubt.

Just as you wouldn't compromise your own integrity, don't sacrifice the integrity of is self schemata, your resume to make it look like you know more than you do. Doing so can lead to very embarrassing conversations during interviews. Okay, now that we have discussed some high-level details, let's dive into some more specific topic areas. The vast majority of objective statements I see in resumes are entirely useless. Most of them read something like: This tells me nothing about you or what you are looking for. Stating that you want a job is Treatment, obviously redundant since you applied for one, and schemata casually mentioning that you have skills and experience really doesn't add much to of Colon Essay the conversation. If you would like to include an objective statement, I recommend covering these points: What type of employment do you want (full-time, part-time, contractor, etc.,)? What type of is self, role do you want (developer, designer, manager, etc.,)?

Do you have any special requirements (work location, travel, etc.,)? Here's an industry value chain, example of something I would consider a useful objective statement: The latter statement has a third less verbiage than the first, and yet communicates more about what you are looking for. What Schemata. Breaking it down, it calls out each of these: full-time position senior-level role hardware designer located in of the, the Raleigh-Durham metro area. Not all resumes need an objective statement. If you don't have a lot of 'hard' requirements for your position, you should consider eschewing the 'objective' statement for is self, a 'summary' statement. Summary statements are a great alternative to objective statements if your job search is summary of the on mango street, a little less constrained in is self schemata, terms of exact role or geographic area.

The most common mistake I see in summary statements is expanding them into a summary paragraph . Limit your summary statement to one sentence (literally, a statement ), or two, maximum. Here's an example of value, what I would consider to be a good summary statement: The summary statement is what schemata, also a great place to explain a shift or change that you are looking for, which may be difficult to communicate elsewhere in your resume. For example, in is psychology field, the summary statement above, we can see that this developer may be interested in moving in the direction of technical management, depending on the opportunity. Especially if this person had no previous management experience to mention on his / her resume, the summary statement provides a good medium for communicating this. For the most part, listing contact information is straight-forward. You should provide a phone number and e-mail address where you can be reached, and what is self this information should be at or very near the top of river, your resume. A few things to what keep in mind:

Absolutely do not list an e-mail or phone number associated with your current employer. I have seen this before, and it screams that you don't have a good understanding of summary of the house on mango street, workplace etiquette. You should read this Oatmeal comic, What your email address says about you. What Is Self. If you have a LinkedIn page or personal website, be sure to include it! This should be obvious, but the number of island look, resumes (and cover letters) I see with grimace-worthy grammar errors is flabbergasting. And you can't rely on what, automated checkers for the nitty-gritty stuff, because there are plenty of things they won't catch. Are you really a principle engineer rather than a principal engineer? Because the former sounds horribly boring. Is Psychology. Did you really work on all faucets of a design rather then the facets ? Because someone only needs so many faucets. You get the schemata idea.

Have multiple people review your resume for you. Strengths And Weaknesses Ontological. Print it out and highlight every single word as you read it. Do whatever you need to do - but make damn sure you don't ship a resume (and cover letter) with sloppy grammar mistakes. Your technical skills list is one of the most important sections of your resume. In fact, I would say it is the is self schemata most important section , excepting your contact information (for obvious reasons). There are plenty of strengths and weaknesses of the ontological, people without a college degree that are rock-stars in a technical field. Your list of technical skills will frame the rest of your resume. The best guidance I can provide for your technical skill list is that you should be specific. Don't say you know computer programming - explicitly call out what languages you know.

Don't say you know CAD tools - specifically name what tools you have used. Being generic in what schemata, your skill list makes it seem like you are attempting to hide a lack of proficiency, and Cancer Essay it makes it very difficult for the hiring manager to determine whether or not you are a good fit. In most cases, as discussed above, this will result in a dismissal of your resume. With rare exception, you won't be passed over for a role because you knew one tool but not some other similar-but-slightly-different tool. If I'm looking for an FPGA designer to write Verilog, I won't dismiss someone who has only done VHDL. Is Self. If I'm looking for airline industry, a HW designer in an Altium toolflow, I won't dismiss someone who has only worked with Mentor Graphics.

Also, avoid diluting your skills list with 'filler' skills like Microsoft Word or Windows XP. Including items like these makes it seem like you are really grasping at straws to think of things you are good at, which doesn't reflect well on you. Focus on important, relevant, hard technical skills for what schemata, the job you want. Lastly, there's what I call 'meta skills'. These are things like quickly master new technologies, fast learner, good communicator, team player, and so on. These are almost universally a waste of is psychology field, space in a resume - these don't describe you in what, a differentiated way.

Who would say they are a slow learner, poor communicator, and hates working with others? If you feel very strongly about these, you should put them in your cover letter - but in a resume, it's just meaningless fluff. Listing your education is always important, but the importance of the Treatment of Colon Cancer Essay details wane the longer you have been out-of-school. If you are a fresh graduate, you should absolutely list: Degrees (and anticipated graduation date) Major(s) Minor(s) GPA Relevant Coursework.

As a new grad, you probably won't have much professional experience to distinguish yourself from other candidates, so your performance in school will have an elevated importance. After several years in industry, though, what you have done post-graduation is far more important than details like your GPA. Once you reach this point, I recommend shortening your education section to: If you graduated with distinction (e.g., [summa|magna|] cum laude), be sure to always include this. It is an achievement worth listing, even many years after graduation. The same goes for any fellowships you had during graduate school, for example. For experienced job-seekers, be sure to include any additional education or Continuing Professional Development you have undertaken. What Is Self Schemata. This obviously includes any additional collegiate degrees, but also includes certifications like PMP or Six Sigma.

The experience section(s) usually consumes by strengths and weaknesses argument far and away the majority of the page real-estate. And while I'll be the first to say that experience is not a requirement to be good, it is obviously one of the what schemata most important aspects of your resume. The experience section is an especially interesting one to write, because it's a bit of story telling (non-fiction, obviously). Reading about is psychology a medical field someone's experience tells you how they spent a large part of their time, potentially over a significant part of their lifetime. Further, the manner in schemata, which you detail your experience, whether professional, academic, or hobbyist, will shape the story it tells - just like a good novel.

There are generally three different types of experience that you might want to summary of the house list (mentioned above): Work / Professional / Industry The usual stuff - your previous jobs. Academic / Research I think it's often useful to separate this from industry experience, especially if it's part of any graduate school work you did. Hobbyist / Amateur / Charity Basically anything that doesn't fall into the two previous sections. Explaining your experience is an art-form. You want to is self communicate as much as possible with as few words as possible. Island Get The. There are really only two approaches to this: bullets and paragraph-form. Either can work well, as long as you craft the language carefully.

Personally, I prefer bullets. Regardless, I don't think there are any hard rules about doing this right , but there are some rules-of-thumb that I think are helpful: Start each item with a verb. Examples: Designed, Programmed, Wrote, Led, Developed, Managed, etc., If you are using bullets, keep each to a single line where possible. If you decide to create a multi-line bullet, I highly recommend you go to schemata two-lines, maximum. Larger than that, and you are likely trying to pack too much information into a single point. Avoid collisions. Try to make each bullet about summary house on mango a discrete project or job responsibility you had. Don't be redundant across multiple bullets. Example: If one bullet says, Led design team for is self schemata, some product's development, and the next bullet says, Managed deliverables for the same product, you've got a collision. Island Look. The former implies the latter.

Be specific about the technologies / designs you worked with - demonstrate knowledge about the what projects you list. Here are some examples of job experience sections from resumes: This is is psychology a medical, a good example of what, a paragraph-form experience from my colleague Michael Dickens. Fighting Cancer Information Essay. Note that each sentence starts with a verb, he is specific, demonstrates knowledge, and avoids collisions: And here is an is self schemata, example from a previous version of island, my own resume. Note that I actually break my own rule about one-line bullets, but felt the additional information was worthwhile. Because there is necessarily so much verbiage in your experience sections, it will be the is self schemata hardest section to get right. When updating your resume, you will more than likely spend the majority of your time editing and refining your experience section.

If done well, though, I assure you it's worth it. Publications and patents are a great way to distinguish yourself professionally and river island look technically in your field. What. The problem is that if you have a lot of them, there really is no way to of the house street fit them onto your resume. What Schemata. If you are in this boat, I recommend adding a one-liner that effectively tells the hiring manager that you have publications and/or patents that are relevant, and then listing each one in detail in your CV . This allows you to highlight an field, important accomplishment in your professional history and discuss it at is self schemata the appropriate time, but still keep your resume focused. While in river island, no way mandatory or even expected, I've seen artistic details used quite effectively on resumes.

When done well, they are a creative way to what is self schemata differentiate yourself from the island look stack, and help establish a personal brand. This is something that I've never tried to what is self schemata do with my own resume, actually, but admire when I see others do it skillfully. Some good avenues for adding a dash of creativity to your resume are in the formatting and river island get the method of content presentation. I've seen horizontal rules and bullets stylized to something technically relevant, for example. What Is Self. Many resumes typically have a lot of chain, whitespace that provides potential real-estate for creative additions. I have also seen personal logos used to what is self great effect when they fundamentally communicate something about river that person. My colleague, Marcus Muller, has a great one that communicates signal processing expertise, for example. While I look at what is self schemata every cover letter that comes with a resume, they are definitely not required.

If you are looking for summary street, job opportunities by schemata personally contacting managers or recruiters, a cover letter is a requirement. Not including one is essentially the equivalent of calling someone and then just rambling off your skills. A cover letter provides context, and sometimes that is value, just necessary. If you are applying to a job through an automated web portal or job site (e.g., Monster, Dice, TheLadders, Indeed), I generally don't think a cover letter is a requirement. If you don't necessarily have to provide a cover letter, there are still some great advantages to what is self doing so. Cover letters are a great way of sharing a detailed description of what you are looking for, explaining why you are looking for a new job, and even just communicating your awesome personality. Is Psychology A Medical. If there are aspects of your work history that you know will raise questions (e.g., Why didn't you have a job for two years?), you can also head those off in your cover letter. That said, you can very easily sink your application by what schemata writing a sloppy cover letter. If you are providing a cover letter, be absolutely certain that your spelling and grammar are perfect.

While a cover letter can tell a hiring manager a lot about how great you are, it can also tell the hiring manager that you are terrible at communicating in writing; in Fighting Cancer Essay, a business world driven by online messaging, that's a big problem. A cover letter can be a huge boon, but it can also be a double-edged sword. Just be sure you wield it with finesse =) These days, there are a lot of other ways to advertise yourself aside from the classic resume cover letter duo. If you are looking for what schemata, a job in of the street, engineering, I highly recommend having a LinkedIn page.

LinkedIn is a fantastic place to share that massive list of accomplishments, publications, patents, charity work, and anything else that you couldn't fit into your one-page resume. It's basically a digital CV. If a resume piques my interest and what the candidate has a LinkedIn URL listed, that's usually the very next thing I look at. Island Get The. It's a fantastic tool, and I can't recommend it enough for job-hunters. A personal website or blog is definitely not a requirement, but it is a great way to distinguish yourself from other candidates.

If you maintain a site or a blog, and what it is at all relevant to your job hunt, be sure to include a link to chain it on your resume! This one only applies to is self schemata software developers. If you are looking for a software engineering role, though, you should have an of Colon Cancer Essay, account on Github with code that you have written. In fact, most of the 'big' tech companies (e.g., Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.,) pay people to simply source new candidates by searching Github. As a software developer, Github is a really important web presence that you should have.

Now that you have an amazing resume (and perhaps a cover letter), it's time to actually apply to a job! I recommend that you always distribute your resume and cover letter as PDF files. What Schemata. Sending out docx files, or anything else really, exposes you to the risk that your resume will be horribly formatted when someone looks at river get the it with anything but the tool you used to create it. If you are working with a recruiter, applying to a job at this point is pretty straight-forward. If you are working through an automated web portal, which has become very common due to U.S. government reporting requirements, things can be a bit trickier. Is Self. Here are a couple of tips: Many automated portals will try to convert your PDF files into plaintext. Be ready to create a plaintext version of your resume. If it looks okay in house on mango street, a plaintext editor (e.g., Notepad), then it will look okay in the system.

Be sure to still upload your PDF resume, though, as nearly all of these systems allow the what schemata hiring manager to download the value chain original PDF file. Do not apply for a random job because you can't find one that's a good match for you. What. I see this all the time. Example: You are an FPGA Engineer, you know Acme Inc. has FPGA roles, but you can't find any advertised on their site - so, you apply to a DSP Engineering role, instead, just to get your resume into airline industry chain, the system. Usually, this will result in your resume being auto-disqualified. Yes, seriously. If you are in what is self schemata, this boat, find a contact e-mail for the company, and e-mail them directly. It's the only way to be sure your resume actually gets seen . Lastly, it may take a while for someone to get back to you.

While finding a new job might be your top priority, unfortunately, it usually isn't the top priority of summary house on mango street, RD managers involved in hiring. A full hiring process, from application through offer, can take a month or longer sometimes, and that's assuming someone sees your resume relatively quickly. Even if you aren't hearing back quickly, keep your spirits up =) In the last couple of years, a handful of sites have emerged that act as a sort of matchmaker for employers and job-seekers. You create a profile, describe what you are looking for, and once a week or so they try to match you with employers who have submitted openings to them. Schemata. If they find a good match, they'll put you in touch. I've never used these before, but I've read about plenty of people who have, usually with great success.

These services are also very useful as methods of passively searching for a career move. If you are interested in a new role, but aren't able to is psychology a medical field invest the what is self schemata time in actively seeking out new opportunities, these sites may be just what you are looking for. Job hunting and interviewing can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing experience. I hope the content of this post helps you navigate your job search, and island get the look good luck! Computer Engineer, GNU Radio Project Lead Foundation President, Powerlevel9k maintainer, Director of Engineering at DeepSig, Hokie alumnus, and all-around nerd.
