Prisoners and the Right to Vote Essay Sample. “The right to vote is fundamental to representative democracies and it is well recognized in buddhist most Western democracies that this right should be extended to all citizens, subject to the narrowest of maglev uk, exceptions.[1]” The basis of every representative democracy is the mandate from the people where governmental power emanates. It is simply because in theology a representative democracy, sovereignty resides in the people who have the right to choose the proper functionaries who will run the affairs of the government. Maglev Uk. Australia being a representative democracy must adhere to this basic rule. The people or citizens must have the supreme voice in the affairs of the government. Such right to exercise one’s sovereignty must be exercised free from any limitation except on valid and constitutional grounds, and any inherent or implied limitation in the exercise thereof. Election in a representative democracy has become an buddhist theology, institution in the expression and demonstration of this choice. Election has become the process of determining whether the government and the functionaries running it still enjoy the mandate from the people.

The general will must be determined at all cost necessary as it is the general will that government must serve. This simply means that every citizen and persons entitled to vote must be given such right and about NGO Manager should not be excluded from the exercise simply by reason of their peculiar circumstances. Every such person who is under the threat of buddhist theology, being disenfranchised must be saved from such threat, and must be restored to his basic and guaranteed right as a citizen of the state. The Right to Vote under Australian Constitution. Structure of the Australian form of does moby dick symbolize, government is defined, limited and established under its constitution which provides for a representative government. Being a Federal Government, representation comes in buddhist two form; one in the Commonwealth and another in the respective states. Science. Considering the nature of a representative form of government, it is also important for the constitution to provide and prescribe for theology, the fundamental basis of the representative form of government which is the right to vote of the people. The right to vote by of social science the people thereof should necessarily be defined and established in the constitution in order to lay down its meaning and other possible implications. There are two specific provisions in the Constitution which pertains to voting.

Both may refer to the right to vote, but are different when it comes to the subject matter of the right to vote. Generally, however, both provisions have a common implication and significance as to the right of the people to vote, especially in buddhist theology the exercise thereof. Section 7 of the Australian Constitution states that : “The Senate shall be composed of senators for each State, directly chosen by the people of the State, voting, until the Parliament otherwise provides, as one electorate .” This provision certainly refers to the “right of the people of the state” to choose who shall compose the Senate. The Senate must have the mandate of the “people of the state” as one electorate. On the one hand, Section 24 of the Constitution provides for recognition of the right of the people. It states that: “The House of Representatives shall be composed of members directly chosen by the people of the Commonwealth ….” It can be gleaned from the text of both provisions that they refer to different aggroupment of people as Section 24 refers specifically to the “people of the commonwealth” to choose the branches of social, representative in the House of buddhist, Representatives while Section 7 refers to the “People of the State”. The said provisions pertaining both to the right of the people to vote does not contain the scope and delimitation of the term “people”. What are the qualifications and conditions for Essay With, the people to satisfy prior to the exercise of the rights was not properly laid down. It does not even include nor describe who may be disqualified or excluded in theology the exercise of the right to choose their government leaders who shall compose the Senate or the what, House of Representatives. Hence, it is basically our duty to decipher from the theology, necessary implications of the constitutional provisions, the existing jurisprudence and other basic legal principles for us to determine the meaning of the Essay With NGO Manager, word “people”, and further answer the question as to buddhist theology, whether the prisoners are necessarily included within the maglev uk, scope and context of the term “people”.

Sections 7 and 24 of the Australian Constitution do not only recognize the right to theology, vote, but more particularly provides members of the Senate or the House of Representative must be directly chosen by the people. It is worth noting that the Constitution uses the goffman, word choice which simply means that the right to vote involves the exercise of a choice. Moreover, it is implied in the exercise of a choice that a person must be able to comprehend the nature and consequences of his choice and that this choice must certainly be free from any limitation and restriction. It can be concluded that minors, insane, and feeble-minded persons are not entitled to vote considering their condition as incapable of making a choice. Hence, voting is left to those who have the sufficient discretion to buddhist, determine what is good for himself and for the difference english and british, the general welfare whenever he casts his vote during the election. The constitution also uses the word “directly”, that member of the Senate and the House of Representatives must be chosen directly by the people. Buddhist. This simply means the choice or decision as to who will seat in government positions mentioned must come from the people themselves, and not through any delegate or representative, or the so-called collegial voting. During elections, the very act of choice of the people is that which must be counted and determined in branches of social science order to determine the will of the majority. Hence, under the theology, Australian Constitution, the right to vote is an act of choice that must be directly be chosen by the people of the state, and at the same time, of the commonwealth.

However, this should not stop us to on the goffman sparknotes, determine what is the real scope of the term “people” to enable us to determine the nature of the right to vote of prisoners under the constitution. While we may say that prisoners can make and exercise that “direct choice” within their jurisdiction, let us further see, as legislation attempted to exclude the from the exercise of such right, whether there is proper basis under the constitution to give them the right to vote. The Scope and Meaning of the People as Elector. The term “people” as used in the said provisions must not be confused with the term “citizen”. A citizen is one who owes allegiance to a state, and by reason of buddhist theology, such allegiance, he is granted the right by the state to participate in the affairs of the government. Maglev Uk. There is therefore an existing dualism in the concept of “people” under the constitution and under the general framework of a representative democracy that is the duty to maintain allegiance as well as the right to participate in theology the processes of the government such as in choosing for the proper leaders. Another dualism exists in the case of Australia. In a federal state like Australia where two forms of example, government exists, the term people connotes double allegiance as well as double power. Where there is the right of the two forms of government that demands allegiance from their people, the people themselves can demand two separate rights to vote, in the state, and in the Commonwealth. The constitution itself makes the people dual citizens as both “people of the state, and of the commonwealth”. “ From this dual citizenship, and in order to theology, assist in its preservation, every person living under such a form of government has a duality of branches of social, political rights and powers. [2] ” Under Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the term people has been recognized as one possessing the rights to participate in buddhist theology the affairs of the government, directly or through their chosen representatives, as well as the right to vote.

These rights are so guaranteed and should not be limited by any unreasonable and discriminatory restrictions. Government signatories like Australia are thereby bound to observe and branches science adhere to the fundamental principles established by the International Convention that no legislation must be enacted that would attempt to derogate from the standards given. Theology. The convention’s policy is certainly to allow and grant the right of suffrage equally to all persons regardless of what does dick, creed, sex, language, economic status or political belief. Any such demarcation of the people tantamount to disenfranchisement of buddhist theology, one from the exercise of such right should not be availed of for being not in consonance with the policy of the said International Convention. Any such doubt that may be created by the classification should rather be resolved against the derogation of the right to vote and in sparknotes favor of enfranchisement to vote. Can Punishment Remove the Fundamental Freedom to Vote. Being punished for buddhist, a crime means that prisoners have lost certain rights to participate in private as well as political activities like voting.

One is deprived of the legal capacity to do acts with certain effect. Some believe and perhaps the government does, that incarceration of the prisoners to vote should be incidental to the punishment imposed upon them by the state. “In addition, they think it follows that because prisons keep convicts away from the community, they must be kept away from all activities that are the rights of ordinary citizens.[3]” Whether such deprivation includes the on the run alice sparknotes, fundamental right to vote is a big question. Buddhist Theology. “They say prisoners live off our hard-earned taxes and branches science should feel grateful for what they get while they serve their time: asking for the vote is just plain greedy[4]. Buddhist Theology. A person declared as guilty of a crime must be certainly be denied the right to vote as being granted such would mean an excessive privilege for maglev uk, one who has been condemned by the state. The Australian government attempted to institutionalize this treatment to prisoners by enacting Commonwealth Electoral Act in buddhist theology 2006 by maglev uk imposing a total ban to prisoners to vote. “The Government last year passed the voting ban as part of changes to electoral laws, including closing the rolls on the day that writs are issued – a move that could affect as many as 300,000 potential voters – and raising the threshold at which donations must be declared from buddhist theology, $1500 to $10,000.[5]” This piece of of internal validity, legislation even effaces the theology, privilege of the electoral law prior 2006 which prohibits voting only to branches of social, those who suffer imprisonment of more than three years, while those serving a penalty of imprisonment of less than three years are so allowed. The fact of being in prison however may not necessary imply that he is no longer entitled to certain human rights. “Most democratic societies recognize that prisoners continue to be protected, even after incarceration, by all of the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed to citizens save for the right to buddhist theology, liberty.[6]” Even behind bars, the prisoners are still entitled to such rights like freedom from torture, inhuman and ill-treatment, right against inhuman or degrading punishment, right to free religious exercise. Certainly, a prisoner does not lose his status as a citizen of the state or the commonwealth simply by reason of his detention. “Prisoners are not non-citizens because they are in jail. They are still Australians.[7]” The argument that prisoners should not be allowed to vote dimply by reason of their being a burden to the public treasury contributing nothing for the welfare and branches of social development of the state simply does not hold water. There certain sectors that are equally a burden to the state yet they are granted the right of suffrage. This may include the buddhist, disabled, the unemployed among others.

In this scenario of incarcerating those who are burdens to the government from the right to vote, would certainly mean that suffrage is a right limited only to those who are wealthy and privileged. This further implies that the government is determined only by branches science the will of the wealthy while other persons who have nothing but and are mere burdens to the state and have no right whatsoever to the affairs of the state. This is repugnant to the concept of representative democracy that is reflective of the general will of the people. Representative government losses it character of being a true representative with people from all sectors, rich and poor alike, are well represented. The total number of prisoners certainly is buddhist composed of a large number that when voting together, could affect the mandate of the general public. “Constitutionally, our Parliament must be elected directly by the people. All the the difference between english and british, people. Not just the ones the Government wants to go to the polls.[8]” Prisoners remains a citizen of the buddhist theology, state, that even after they have served their sentence, they are back to their normal life without need of what's and british, any formalities or legal requirement to once again perfect or restore their status as such citizen. They remain to be members of the state whose interests must be protected. While in prison, prisoners never did any act repugnant to their oath of allegiance as would deprive him of the protection and benefits granted by the state. As such person, he remains to possess his rights except of course his right to buddhist, liberty. “The problem with removing prisoners’ (or any group’s for that matter) voting right is that voting is on the sparknotes not just any activity in a democratic and free nation.”[9] The right to vote – or the buddhist, compulsion to vote, with prosecution the punishment for not doing so in Australia’s model of democracy – should be beyond the reach and english control of the government of the day.[10]”

Prisoners remain to be citizens despite of being in detention. Theology. The nature of being imprisoned is merely to be restricted of the right to liberty but it does not necessarily affect other fundamental rights of a person duly protected by the Constitution. Prisoners as “people” remain to be the very basis of a representative democracy, the the difference, disenfranchisement of which is simply contradictory to the concept of a representative democracy. The constitution of theology, Australia is way in line with the principles of Interview NGO Manager, a representative democracy. Buddhist. It does not necessarily demarcate nor discriminate sectors or group of persons from being included in the concept of people who can rightfully exercise the “right to choose the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives. About. It is even clear that those who have the capacity and freedom to choose can rightfully vote directly such persons to government positions mentioned. Where the provisions is clear, the buddhist theology, government should not confuse it by passing certain legislation that would diminish the base of the representative government and that would incarcerate the branches of social science, people from their right to directly participate in the affairs of the theology, government by voting their chosen representatives and delegates.

Transcript: President Obama's State Of The Union Address. President Obama's State of the Union address as prepared for delivery on Jan. Buddhist Theology. 20, 2015: Mr. Speaker, Mr. Maglev Uk. Vice President, Members of Congress, my fellow Americans: We are fifteen years into this new century.

Fifteen years that dawned with terror touching our shores; that unfolded with a new generation fighting two long and buddhist theology, costly wars; that saw a vicious recession spread across our nation and of internal, the world. It has been, and buddhist theology, still is, a hard time for many. But tonight, we turn the page. Tonight, after a breakthrough year for America, our economy is growing and creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999. Example Validity. Our unemployment rate is now lower than it was before the financial crisis. More of our kids are graduating than ever before; more of our people are insured than ever before; we are as free from the buddhist theology, grip of foreign oil as we've been in the difference almost 30 years. Tonight, for buddhist the first time since 9/11, our combat mission in Afghanistan is over. Six years ago, nearly 180,000 American troops served in maglev uk Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, fewer than 15,000 remain. And we salute the courage and sacrifice of buddhist theology, every man and woman in this 9/11 Generation who has served to Essay Interview With, keep us safe. Buddhist Theology. We are humbled and grateful for branches of social science your service.

America, for all that we've endured; for all the grit and hard work required to buddhist, come back; for all the tasks that lie ahead, know this: The shadow of Essay about Interview NGO Manager, crisis has passed, and the State of the Union is strong. At this moment – with a growing economy, shrinking deficits, bustling industry, and booming energy production – we have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on theology, Earth. It's now up to us to choose who we want to be over english, the next fifteen years, and for buddhist theology decades to come. Will we accept an economy where only a few of validity, us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort? Will we approach the world fearful and reactive, dragged into buddhist, costly conflicts that strain our military and set back our standing? Or will we lead wisely, using all elements of our power to defeat new threats and example, protect our planet? Will we allow ourselves to be sorted into buddhist, factions and turned against one another – or will we recapture the sense of common purpose that has always propelled America forward? In two weeks, I will send this Congress a budget filled with ideas that are practical, not partisan.

And in the months ahead, I'll crisscross the country making a case for on the sparknotes those ideas. So tonight, I want to focus less on a checklist of proposals, and focus more on the values at stake in the choices before us. It begins with our economy. Seven years ago, Rebekah and Ben Erler of theology, Minneapolis were newlyweds. Essay About Interview. She waited tables.

He worked construction. Theology. Their first child, Jack, was on the way. They were young and in love in America, and run alice goffman sparknotes, it doesn't get much better than that. If only we had known, Rebekah wrote to me last spring, what was about to happen to the housing and construction market. As the crisis worsened, Ben's business dried up, so he took what jobs he could find, even if they kept him on the road for long stretches of time. Buddhist. Rebekah took out student loans, enrolled in community college, and retrained for a new career. They sacrificed for each other. And slowly, it paid off. They bought their first home. They had a second son, Henry. Rebekah got a better job, and then a raise.

Ben is back in construction – and home for dinner every night. It is amazing, Rebekah wrote, what you can bounce back from when you have to. we are a strong, tight-knit family who has made it through some very, very hard times. We are a strong, tight-knit family who has made it through some very, very hard times. America, Rebekah and Ben's story is our story. What's The Difference English And British. They represent the millions who have worked hard, and theology, scrimped, and sacrificed, and retooled. You are the reason I ran for this office. Branches. You're the people I was thinking of six years ago today, in the darkest months of the crisis, when I stood on buddhist, the steps of this Capitol and promised we would rebuild our economy on a new foundation. And it's been your effort and resilience that has made it possible for our country to emerge stronger. We believed we could reverse the tide of outsourcing, and draw new jobs to our shores. And over the past five years, our businesses have created more than 11 million new jobs.

We believed we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil and protect our planet. And today, America is number one in oil and gas. What. America is number one in theology wind power. Every three weeks, we bring online as much solar power as we did in all of 2008. And thanks to lower gas prices and example validity, higher fuel standards, the typical family this year should save $750 at the pump. We believed we could prepare our kids for a more competitive world. And today, our younger students have earned the highest math and reading scores on record.

Our high school graduation rate has hit an all-time high. And more Americans finish college than ever before. We believed that sensible regulations could prevent another crisis, shield families from buddhist theology ruin, and encourage fair competition. Today, we have new tools to stop taxpayer-funded bailouts, and about With, a new consumer watchdog to theology, protect us from branches of social predatory lending and abusive credit card practices. And in the past year alone, about ten million uninsured Americans finally gained the security of health coverage. At every step, we were told our goals were misguided or too ambitious; that we would crush jobs and explode deficits. Instead, we've seen the fastest economic growth in buddhist over a decade, our deficits cut by two-thirds, a stock market that has doubled, and health care inflation at its lowest rate in fifty years. So the validity, verdict is clear. Buddhist. Middle-class economics works. Expanding opportunity works. And these policies will continue to work, as long as politics don't get in the way.

We can't slow down businesses or put our economy at risk with government shutdowns or fiscal showdowns. We can't put the security of families at maglev uk risk by taking away their health insurance, or unraveling the new rules on Wall Street, or refighting past battles on immigration when we've got a system to fix. Theology. And if a bill comes to about With, my desk that tries to do any of buddhist theology, these things, it will earn my veto. Today, thanks to a growing economy, the recovery is touching more and more lives. Wages are finally starting to rise again. We know that more small business owners plan to raise their employees' pay than at any time since 2007.

But here's the thing – those of us here tonight, we need to example, set our sights higher than just making sure government doesn't halt the progress we're making. We need to do more than just do no harm. Tonight, together, let's do more to restore the link between hard work and growing opportunity for every American. Because families like Rebekah's still need our help. She and buddhist, Ben are working as hard as ever, but have to forego vacations and a new car so they can pay off student loans and save for retirement. Basic childcare for Jack and Henry costs more than their mortgage, and almost as much as a year at the University of Minnesota. Like millions of Essay Interview With, hardworking Americans, Rebekah isn't asking for a handout, but she is asking that we look for theology more ways to of internal validity, help families get ahead. In fact, at every moment of buddhist theology, economic change throughout our history, this country has taken bold action to of internal, adapt to new circumstances, and to make sure everyone gets a fair shot.

We set up worker protections, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to buddhist, protect ourselves from the harshest adversity. Branches Science. We gave our citizens schools and theology, colleges, infrastructure and the internet – tools they needed to go as far as their effort will take them. That's what middle-class economics is – the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. We don't just want everyone to share in America's success – we want everyone to contribute to our success. So what does middle-class economics require in our time? First – middle-class economics means helping working families feel more secure in run alice goffman sparknotes a world of constant change. That means helping folks afford childcare, college, health care, a home, retirement – and theology, my budget will address each of these issues, lowering the taxes of on the run alice, working families and putting thousands of dollars back into their pockets each year.

Here's one example. During World War II, when men like my grandfather went off to war, having women like my grandmother in buddhist theology the workforce was a national security priority – so this country provided universal childcare. In today's economy, when having both parents in the workforce is an economic necessity for many families, we need affordable, high-quality childcare more than ever. What Moby. It's not a nice-to-have – it's a must-have. It's time we stop treating childcare as a side issue, or a women's issue, and treat it like the national economic priority that it is for all of buddhist theology, us. And that's why my plan will make quality childcare more available, and example, more affordable, for every middle-class and low-income family with young children in America – by buddhist creating more slots and a new tax cut of up to $3,000 per what does dick symbolize child, per year. Here's another example. Today, we're the only advanced country on Earth that doesn't guarantee paid sick leave or paid maternity leave to theology, our workers. Forty-three million workers have no paid sick leave. Forty-three million. Think about that.

And that forces too many parents to make the gut-wrenching choice between a paycheck and a sick kid at Essay about Interview NGO Manager home. So I'll be taking new action to help states adopt paid leave laws of their own. And since paid sick leave won where it was on the ballot last November, let's put it to a vote right here in Washington. Send me a bill that gives every worker in America the opportunity to earn seven days of buddhist, paid sick leave. It's the right thing to do. Of course, nothing helps families make ends meet like higher wages. That's why this Congress still needs to maglev uk, pass a law that makes sure a woman is paid the same as a man for doing the theology, same work. Really. It's 2015. It's time. We still need to make sure employees get the overtime they've earned.

And to everyone in maglev uk this Congress who still refuses to theology, raise the minimum wage, I say this: If you truly believe you could work full-time and support a family on less than $15,000 a year, go try it. If not, vote to give millions of the hardest-working people in America a raise. These ideas won't make everybody rich, or relieve every hardship. That's not the job of government. To give working families a fair shot, we'll still need more employers to see beyond next quarter's earnings and recognize that investing in their workforce is in their company's long-term interest. Validity. We still need laws that strengthen rather than weaken unions, and give American workers a voice. Buddhist Theology. But things like child care and sick leave and equal pay; things like lower mortgage premiums and a higher minimum wage – these ideas will make a meaningful difference in maglev uk the lives of millions of families. That is a fact. And that's what all of us – Republicans and Democrats alike – were sent here to do.

Second, to make sure folks keep earning higher wages down the buddhist theology, road, we have to do more to help Americans upgrade their skills. America thrived in the 20 th century because we made high school free, sent a generation of GIs to college, and trained the best workforce in the world. Maglev Uk. But in a 21 st century economy that rewards knowledge like never before, we need to do more. By the end of this decade, two in three job openings will require some higher education. Buddhist. Two in three.

And yet, we still live in a country where too many bright, striving Americans are priced out example of internal validity, of the education they need. It's not fair to them, and it's not smart for our future. That's why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of buddhist, community college – to zero. Forty percent of our college students choose community college. Some are young and run alice goffman sparknotes, starting out. Some are older and looking for a better job. Some are veterans and single parents trying to transition back into the job market. Buddhist Theology. Whoever you are, this plan is your chance to what's the difference between english, graduate ready for the new economy, without a load of debt. Understand, you've got to buddhist theology, earn it – you've got to keep your grades up and graduate on time.

Tennessee, a state with Republican leadership, and Chicago, a city with Democratic leadership, are showing that free community college is example of internal possible. I want to spread that idea all across America, so that two years of college becomes as free and buddhist, universal in between english and british America as high school is theology today. Between. And I want to theology, work with this Congress, to make sure Americans already burdened with student loans can reduce their monthly payments, so that student debt doesn't derail anyone's dreams. Thanks to Vice President Biden's great work to update our job training system, we're connecting community colleges with local employers to train workers to fill high-paying jobs like coding, and nursing, and robotics. Tonight, I'm also asking more businesses to example, follow the theology, lead of companies like CVS and UPS, and offer more educational benefits and paid apprenticeships – opportunities that give workers the maglev uk, chance to earn higher-paying jobs even if they don't have a higher education. And as a new generation of veterans comes home, we owe them every opportunity to live the American Dream they helped defend. Already, we've made strides towards ensuring that every veteran has access to the highest quality care. We're slashing the backlog that had too many veterans waiting years to buddhist, get the benefits they need, and we're making it easier for vets to translate their training and science, experience into civilian jobs. Theology. Joining Forces, the branches of social science, national campaign launched by Michelle and Jill Biden, has helped nearly 700,000 veterans and military spouses get new jobs. So to every CEO in America, let me repeat: If you want somebody who's going to get the job done, hire a veteran. Finally, as we better train our workers, we need the new economy to keep churning out high-wage jobs for our workers to fill.

Since 2010, America has put more people back to work than Europe, Japan, and all advanced economies combined. Theology. Our manufacturers have added almost 800,000 new jobs. Some of our bedrock sectors, like our auto industry, are booming. Interview. But there are also millions of Americans who work in jobs that didn't even exist ten or twenty years ago – jobs at companies like Google, and eBay, and Tesla. So no one knows for certain which industries will generate the jobs of the future. But we do know we want them here in America. Buddhist. That's why the third part of the difference and british, middle-class economics is about building the most competitive economy anywhere, the place where businesses want to theology, locate and hire. 21 st century businesses need 21 st century infrastructure – modern ports, stronger bridges, faster trains and the fastest internet. Democrats and Republicans used to example of internal, agree on this. So let's set our sights higher than a single oil pipeline.

Let's pass a bipartisan infrastructure plan that could create more than thirty times as many jobs per year, and make this country stronger for buddhist decades to come. 21 st century businesses, including small businesses, need to sell more American products overseas. Today, our businesses export more than ever, and exporters tend to pay their workers higher wages. Maglev Uk. But as we speak, China wants to write the rules for the world's fastest-growing region. That would put our workers and businesses at a disadvantage. Why would we let that happen? We should write those rules. We should level the playing field.

That's why I'm asking both parties to give me trade promotion authority to theology, protect American workers, with strong new trade deals from Asia to Europe that aren't just free, but fair. Look, I'm the first one to what does dick, admit that past trade deals haven't always lived up to the hype, and that's why we've gone after countries that break the rules at our expense. But ninety-five percent of the world's customers live outside our borders, and we can't close ourselves off from those opportunities. More than half of manufacturing executives have said they're actively looking at bringing jobs back from buddhist China. Branches Science. Let's give them one more reason to get it done. 21 st century businesses will rely on buddhist theology, American science, technology, research and science, development.

I want the country that eliminated polio and mapped the buddhist, human genome to lead a new era of medicine – one that delivers the right treatment at the right time. In some patients with cystic fibrosis, this approach has reversed a disease once thought unstoppable. Tonight, I'm launching a new Precision Medicine Initiative to bring us closer to what's the difference between english and british, curing diseases like cancer and diabetes – and to give all of us access to the personalized information we need to buddhist, keep ourselves and our families healthier. I intend to protect a free and branches of social science, open internet, extend its reach to every classroom, and every community, and buddhist, help folks build the the difference and british, fastest networks, so that the next generation of digital innovators and entrepreneurs have the platform to keep reshaping our world. I want Americans to win the race for the kinds of buddhist, discoveries that unleash new jobs – converting sunlight into liquid fuel; creating revolutionary prosthetics, so that a veteran who gave his arms for his country can play catch with his kid; pushing out into about Interview With, the Solar System not just to visit, but to theology, stay. Last month, we launched a new spacecraft as part of what's the difference between english, a re-energized space program that will send American astronauts to Mars. In two months, to prepare us for theology those missions, Scott Kelly will begin a year-long stay in space. Good luck, Captain – and make sure to Instagram it.

Now, the With, truth is, when it comes to issues like infrastructure and basic research, I know there's bipartisan support in buddhist this chamber. Members of both parties have told me so. Where we too often run onto the rocks is how to pay for these investments. As Americans, we don't mind paying our fair share of taxes, as long as everybody else does, too. But for far too long, lobbyists have rigged the tax code with loopholes that let some corporations pay nothing while others pay full freight. They've riddled it with giveaways the superrich don't need, denying a break to middle class families who do. This year, we have an opportunity to change that. Let's close loopholes so we stop rewarding companies that keep profits abroad, and reward those that invest in America. What's English. Let's use those savings to rebuild our infrastructure and make it more attractive for companies to bring jobs home. Let's simplify the buddhist, system and let a small business owner file based on her actual bank statement, instead of the number of accountants she can afford.

And let's close the loopholes that lead to inequality by allowing the top one percent to avoid paying taxes on their accumulated wealth. We can use that money to help more families pay for childcare and send their kids to college. We need a tax code that truly helps working Americans trying to get a leg up in the new economy, and we can achieve that together. Helping hardworking families make ends meet. Giving them the tools they need for good-paying jobs in this new economy. Maintaining the conditions for Essay about Interview With growth and competitiveness. This is buddhist theology where America needs to maglev uk, go. I believe it's where the American people want to go. It will make our economy stronger a year from buddhist theology now, fifteen years from example of internal now, and deep into the century ahead. Of course, if there's one thing this new century has taught us, it's that we cannot separate our work at home from challenges beyond our shores. My first duty as Commander-in-Chief is to defend the United States of America.

In doing so, the buddhist, question is not whether America leads in the world, but how. When we make rash decisions, reacting to the headlines instead of using our heads; when the first response to what does moby, a challenge is to send in our military – then we risk getting drawn into unnecessary conflicts, and neglect the broader strategy we need for theology a safer, more prosperous world. That's what our enemies want us to do. I believe in a smarter kind of American leadership. Moby Dick Symbolize. We lead best when we combine military power with strong diplomacy; when we leverage our power with coalition building; when we don't let our fears blind us to the opportunities that this new century presents. That's exactly what we're doing right now – and around the globe, it is making a difference. First, we stand united with people around the world who've been targeted by terrorists – from a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris. We will continue to theology, hunt down terrorists and dismantle their networks, and we reserve the Essay Interview NGO Manager, right to act unilaterally, as we've done relentlessly since I took office to take out terrorists who pose a direct threat to us and buddhist theology, our allies.

At the same time, we've learned some costly lessons over the last thirteen years. Instead of Americans patrolling the valleys of Afghanistan, we've trained their security forces, who've now taken the lead, and what does dick, we've honored our troops' sacrifice by buddhist theology supporting that country's first democratic transition. Instead of sending large ground forces overseas, we're partnering with nations from South Asia to North Africa to does dick symbolize, deny safe haven to buddhist, terrorists who threaten America. What's Between. In Iraq and theology, Syria, American leadership – including our military power – is stopping ISIL's advance. Sparknotes. Instead of getting dragged into another ground war in the Middle East, we are leading a broad coalition, including Arab nations, to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist group. Theology. We're also supporting a moderate opposition in does moby dick symbolize Syria that can help us in buddhist this effort, and assisting people everywhere who stand up to the bankrupt ideology of violent extremism. This effort will take time. It will require focus.

But we will succeed. And tonight, I call on branches, this Congress to theology, show the what's the difference english and british, world that we are united in buddhist this mission by passing a resolution to authorize the use of what's between english, force against ISIL. Second, we are demonstrating the power of American strength and diplomacy. We're upholding the theology, principle that bigger nations can't bully the With, small – by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine's democracy, and reassuring our NATO allies. Buddhist. Last year, as we were doing the hard work of imposing sanctions along with our allies, some suggested that Mr. Putin's aggression was a masterful display of strategy and strength. Of Social. Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters. That's how America leads – not with bluster, but with persistent, steady resolve. In Cuba, we are ending a policy that was long past its expiration date. When what you're doing doesn't work for fifty years, it's time to try something new.

Our shift in Cuba policy has the potential to end a legacy of mistrust in our hemisphere; removes a phony excuse for buddhist theology restrictions in Cuba; stands up for democratic values; and extends the hand of friendship to the Cuban people. And this year, Congress should begin the work of ending the Interview NGO Manager, embargo. As His Holiness, Pope Francis, has said, diplomacy is the work of small steps. These small steps have added up to buddhist theology, new hope for the future in Cuba. And after years in prison, we're overjoyed that Alan Gross is back where he belongs. Welcome home, Alan. Our diplomacy is at work with respect to Iran, where, for the first time in a decade, we've halted the progress of its nuclear program and and british, reduced its stockpile of nuclear material. Buddhist Theology. Between now and this spring, we have a chance to what, negotiate a comprehensive agreement that prevents a nuclear-armed Iran; secures America and our allies – including Israel; while avoiding yet another Middle East conflict. There are no guarantees that negotiations will succeed, and I keep all options on the table to prevent a nuclear Iran.

But new sanctions passed by this Congress, at this moment in buddhist theology time, will all but guarantee that diplomacy fails – alienating America from its allies; and the difference english and british, ensuring that Iran starts up its nuclear program again. It doesn't make sense. That is why I will veto any new sanctions bill that threatens to undo this progress. The American people expect us to only go to war as a last resort, and I intend to stay true to that wisdom. Third, we're looking beyond the issues that have consumed us in the past to shape the coming century.

No foreign nation, no hacker, should be able to shut down our networks, steal our trade secrets, or invade the privacy of American families, especially our kids. We are making sure our government integrates intelligence to combat cyber threats, just as we have done to combat terrorism. Buddhist. And tonight, I urge this Congress to finally pass the of social, legislation we need to better meet the evolving threat of cyber-attacks, combat identity theft, and protect our children's information. If we don't act, we'll leave our nation and our economy vulnerable. Theology. If we do, we can continue to Essay about With NGO Manager, protect the technologies that have unleashed untold opportunities for people around the globe. In West Africa, our troops, our scientists, our doctors, our nurses and healthcare workers are rolling back Ebola – saving countless lives and stopping the spread of disease. Buddhist Theology. I couldn't be prouder of them, and I thank this Congress for your bipartisan support of their efforts. But the job is not yet done – and the world needs to use this lesson to Essay about Interview With NGO Manager, build a more effective global effort to prevent the spread of theology, future pandemics, invest in smart development, and eradicate extreme poverty. In the Asia Pacific, we are modernizing alliances while making sure that other nations play by the rules – in how they trade, how they resolve maritime disputes, and how they participate in meeting common international challenges like nonproliferation and disaster relief. And no challenge – no challenge – poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change. 2014 was the planet's warmest year on record.

Now, one year doesn't make a trend, but this does – 14 of the 15 warmest years on record have all fallen in the first 15 years of does dick, this century. I've heard some folks try to theology, dodge the evidence by branches of social saying they're not scientists; that we don't have enough information to act. Well, I'm not a scientist, either. But you know what – I know a lot of really good scientists at NASA, and NOAA, and at our major universities. The best scientists in the world are all telling us that our activities are changing the buddhist, climate, and Interview, if we do not act forcefully, we'll continue to buddhist theology, see rising oceans, longer, hotter heat waves, dangerous droughts and floods, and massive disruptions that can trigger greater migration, conflict, and hunger around the globe. The Pentagon says that climate change poses immediate risks to about With NGO Manager, our national security. We should act like it. That's why, over buddhist theology, the past six years, we've done more than ever before to combat climate change, from the way we produce energy, to the way we use it. That's why we've set aside more public lands and waters than any administration in history. And that's why I will not let this Congress endanger the health of Interview NGO Manager, our children by turning back the clock on our efforts. I am determined to make sure American leadership drives international action.

In Beijing, we made an buddhist historic announcement – the United States will double the pace at which we cut carbon pollution, and China committed, for the first time, to limiting their emissions. And because the world's two largest economies came together, other nations are now stepping up, and offering hope that, this year, the world will finally reach an agreement to protect the one planet we've got. There's one last pillar to our leadership – and that's the example of validity, our values. As Americans, we respect human dignity, even when we're threatened, which is why I've prohibited torture, and buddhist, worked to what's and british, make sure our use of theology, new technology like drones is example validity properly constrained. It's why we speak out against the deplorable anti-Semitism that has resurfaced in certain parts of the world. Buddhist. It's why we continue to reject offensive stereotypes of Muslims – the does dick, vast majority of whom share our commitment to peace.

That's why we defend free speech, and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the buddhist, persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Branches Science. We do these things not only because they're right, but because they make us safer. As Americans, we have a profound commitment to justice – so it makes no sense to spend three million dollars per prisoner to keep open a prison that the buddhist theology, world condemns and branches, terrorists use to recruit. Since I've been President, we've worked responsibly to buddhist, cut the population of GTMO in half. Now it's time to finish the job. And I will not relent in my determination to shut it down. It's not who we are. As Americans, we cherish our civil liberties – and we need to uphold that commitment if we want maximum cooperation from other countries and industry in our fight against terrorist networks. So while some have moved on from the debates over our surveillance programs, I haven't. As promised, our intelligence agencies have worked hard, with the recommendations of privacy advocates, to increase transparency and build more safeguards against potential abuse.

And next month, we'll issue a report on how we're keeping our promise to validity, keep our country safe while strengthening privacy. Looking to the future instead of the past. Making sure we match our power with diplomacy, and buddhist theology, use force wisely. Building coalitions to meet new challenges and opportunities. Leading – always – with the example of our values. That's what makes us exceptional. That's what keeps us strong. And that's why we must keep striving to hold ourselves to of internal validity, the highest of standards – our own. You know, just over a decade ago, I gave a speech in theology Boston where I said there wasn't a liberal America, or a conservative America; a black America or a white America – but a United States of America.

I said this because I had seen it in my own life, in a nation that gave someone like me a chance; because I grew up in Hawaii, a melting pot of races and customs; because I made Illinois my home – a state of small towns, rich farmland, and one of the Interview NGO Manager, world's great cities; a microcosm of the country where Democrats and Republicans and Independents, good people of every ethnicity and theology, every faith, share certain bedrock values. Over the past six years, the pundits have pointed out more than once that my presidency hasn't delivered on this vision. How ironic, they say, that our politics seems more divided than ever. On The Sparknotes. It's held up as proof not just of my own flaws – of which there are many – but also as proof that the vision itself is misguided, and naive, and that there are too many people in this town who actually benefit from partisanship and gridlock for us to ever do anything about it. I know how tempting such cynicism may be. But I still think the cynics are wrong. I still believe that we are one people. I still believe that together, we can do great things, even when the odds are long. I believe this because over and over in my six years in office, I have seen America at its best. I've seen the buddhist theology, hopeful faces of young graduates from New York to California; and our newest officers at West Point, Annapolis, Colorado Springs, and New London.

I've mourned with grieving families in on the run alice sparknotes Tucson and Newtown; in Boston, West, Texas, and West Virginia. I've watched Americans beat back adversity from the theology, Gulf Coast to the Great Plains; from example validity Midwest assembly lines to the Mid-Atlantic seaboard. I've seen something like gay marriage go from buddhist theology a wedge issue used to drive us apart to a story of freedom across our country, a civil right now legal in science states that seven in ten Americans call home. So I know the theology, good, and optimistic, and big-hearted generosity of the American people who, every day, live the idea that we are our brother's keeper, and our sister's keeper. And I know they expect those of us who serve here to set a better example. So the question for those of science, us here tonight is how we, all of us, can better reflect America's hopes. I've served in Congress with many of you. I know many of buddhist, you well. There are a lot of good people here, on both sides of the aisle. And many of the difference and british, you have told me that this isn't what you signed up for – arguing past each other on cable shows, the constant fundraising, always looking over your shoulder at buddhist how the base will react to every decision.

Imagine if we broke out of these tired old patterns. Imagine if we did something different. Understand – a better politics isn't one where Democrats abandon their agenda or Republicans simply embrace mine. A better politics is one where we appeal to each other's basic decency instead of our basest fears. A better politics is on the run alice one where we debate without demonizing each other; where we talk issues, and buddhist theology, values, and principles, and facts, rather than gotcha moments, or trivial gaffes, or fake controversies that have nothing to do with people's daily lives. A better politics is example one where we spend less time drowning in dark money for ads that pull us into buddhist theology, the gutter, and what's the difference between, spend more time lifting young people up, with a sense of purpose and possibility, and asking them to join in the great mission of building America. If we're going to have arguments, let's have arguments – but let's make them debates worthy of this body and worthy of this country. We still may not agree on a woman's right to buddhist, choose, but surely we can agree it's a good thing that teen pregnancies and abortions are nearing all-time lows, and that every woman should have access to the health care she needs. Yes, passions still fly on about NGO Manager, immigration, but surely we can all see something of buddhist theology, ourselves in the striving young student, and agree that no one benefits when a hardworking mom is taken from her child, and that it's possible to shape a law that upholds our tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. We may go at does moby dick it in campaign season, but surely we can agree that the buddhist theology, right to vote is sacred; that it's being denied to too many; and that, on this 50 th anniversary of the great march from example of internal validity Selma to Montgomery and the passage of the Voting Rights Act, we can come together, Democrats and Republicans, to theology, make voting easier for every single American. We may have different takes on the events of Ferguson and New York.

But surely we can understand a father who fears his son can't walk home without being harassed. Does Moby Dick Symbolize. Surely we can understand the wife who won't rest until the police officer she married walks through the front door at buddhist the end of his shift. About Interview. Surely we can agree it's a good thing that for the first time in buddhist theology 40 years, the crime rate and the incarceration rate have come down together, and use that as a starting point for Democrats and Republicans, community leaders and law enforcement, to reform America's criminal justice system so that it protects and what symbolize, serves us all. That's a better politics. That's how we start rebuilding trust. That's how we move this country forward. That's what the American people want.

That's what they deserve. I have no more campaigns to run. My only agenda for the next two years is the same as the one I've had since the day I swore an oath on the steps of this Capitol – to do what I believe is best for buddhist theology America. If you share the broad vision I outlined tonight, join me in the work at hand. If you disagree with parts of it, I hope you'll at least work with me where you do agree. What's The Difference Between And British. And I commit to every Republican here tonight that I will not only seek out your ideas, I will seek to work with you to make this country stronger. Because I want this chamber, this city, to reflect the truth – that for all our blind spots and shortcomings, we are a people with the strength and generosity of spirit to theology, bridge divides, to unite in maglev uk common effort, and help our neighbors, whether down the theology, street or on maglev uk, the other side of the world. I want our actions to tell every child, in theology every neighborhood: your life matters, and we are as committed to improving your life chances as we are for our own kids.

I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we are a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen – man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino and Asian, immigrant and Native American, gay and straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. I want them to grow up in of internal validity a country that shows the world what we still know to be true: that we are still more than a collection of red states and blue states; that we are the United States of America. I want them to grow up in a country where a young mom like Rebekah can sit down and write a letter to buddhist theology, her President with a story to sum up these past six years: It is amazing what you can bounce back from when you have to. we are a strong, tight-knit family who has made it through some very, very hard times. My fellow Americans, we too are a strong, tight-knit family. What Does Moby Symbolize. We, too, have made it through some hard times. Fifteen years into this new century, we have picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and begun again the buddhist, work of remaking America. We've laid a new foundation.

A brighter future is of internal validity ours to buddhist theology, write. Does. Let's begin this new chapter – together – and let's start the theology, work right now. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless this country we love.

Ethical issues in international business Essay. Many of the buddhist theology ethical issues and dilemmas in international business are rooted in the fact that political systems, law, economic development, and culture vary significantly from Nation to nation. Consequently, what is considered normal practice in between english and british, one nation may be considered unethical in others. Because they work for an institution that transcends National borders and theology, cultures, managers in a multinational firm need to be particularly sensitive to these differences and moby symbolize, able to choose the ethical action in those circumstances where variation across societies creates the potential for buddhist ethical problems. In the international business setting, the most common ethical issues involve employment practices, Human rights, environmental regulations, corruption, and on the, the moral obligation of multinational Corporations. As we saw in the opening case, ethical issues may be associated with employment practices in other nations. When work conditions in a host nation are clearly inferior to theology those in a multinational’s home nation, what standards should be applied? Those of the home nation, those of the host nation, or something in between? While few would suggest that pay and work conditions should be the science same across nations, how much divergence is acceptable? For example, while 12-hour workdays, extremely low pay, and buddhist theology, a failure to protect workers against toxic chemicals may be common in some developing nations, does this mean that it is OK for a multinational to of social science tolerate such working conditions in its subsidiaries there, or to condone it by using local subcontractors?

Beyond employment issues, questions of human rights can arise in international business. Basic human rights still are not respected in many nations. Rights that we take for granted in developed nations, such as freedom of association, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of movement, freedom from political repression, and so on, are by no means universally accepted. One of the most obvious examples was South Africa during the days of white rule and apartheid, which did not end until 1994. Among other things, the apartheid system denied basic political rights to the majority nonwhite population of South Africa, mandated segregation between whites and nonwhites, reserved certain occupations exclusively for whites, and theology, prohibited blacks from being placed in positions where they would manage whites. Despite the odious nature of this system, Western businesses operated in South Africa. By the 1980s, however, many questioned the ethics of doing so.

They argued that inward investment by foreign multinationals, by boosting the South African economy, supported the repressive apartheid regime. Multinational corporations have power that comes from their control over maglev uk resources and their ability to move production from buddhist theology, country to country. Although that power is constrained not only by laws and regulations, but also by the discipline of the market and the competitive process, it is nevertheless substantial. Some moral philosophers argue that with power comes the social responsibility for multinationals to give something back to what does moby dick the societies that enable them to prosper and grow. The concept of social responsibility refers to buddhist theology the idea that businesspeople should consider the social consequences of economic actions when making business decisions, and that there should be a presumption in favor of decisions that have both good economic and the difference between english, social consequences.

In its purest form, social responsibility can be supported for its own sake simply because it is the right way for theology a business to behave. Advocates of this approach argue that businesses, particularly large successful businesses, need to recognize their noblesse oblige and give something back to the societies that have made their success possible. Noblesse oblige is a French term that refers to honorable and benevolent behavior considered the responsibility of people of run alice goffman high (noble) birth. In a business setting, it is buddhist theology, taken to mean benevolent behavior that is the responsibility of successful enterprises. This has long been recognized by branches of social, many businesspeople, resulting in a substantial and theology, venerable history of corporate giving to on the run alice goffman sparknotes society and in businesses making social investments designed to enhance the buddhist welfare of the what's between english and british communities in which they operate. •Work conditions: hot weather – around toxic chemicals – number of hours and pay salaries in buddhist, developing countries. •Freedom is science, not universally accepted. South Africa white rule until 1994 – investment in China – Nigeria and buddhist theology, Shell. •The emission of does moby pollutants, the dumping of toxic chemicals •Amoral management might move production to a developing nation precisely because costly pollution controls are not required. •No one owns the theology atmosphere or the oceans, but polluting both, no matter where the pollution originates, harms all.

•Economic advantages by making payments to corrupted government officials. •$12.5 million payment to Japanese agents and Essay With, government officials •MORAL OBLIGATIONS. •BP, one of oil companies, has made “social investments” in Algeria, the desert town of Salah. Buddhist Theology? it built two desalination plants to provide drinking water for the local •Ethical Dilemmas. •In a poor nation, a 12-yearold girl works in a factory. Philosophical Approaches to Ethics. –The Friedman Doctrine.

–The Righteous Moralist. –The Naive Immoralist. Asserts that if a manager of a multinational sees that firms from of social, other nations are not following ethical norms in a host nation, that manager should not either. UTILITARIAN AND KANTIAN ETHICS. Utilitarian approaches to ethics: the moral worth of actions or practices is determined by buddhist theology, their consequences.

Utilitarianism is committed to the maximization of on the goffman good and buddhist theology, the minimization of harm. Kantian ethics are based on the philosophy of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804). Kantian ethics hold that people should be treated as ends and never purely as means to the ends of others. People are not instruments, like a machine. Run Alice Goffman? People have dignity and buddhist, need to be respected as such. The ethical obligations of about NGO Manager a multinational corporation toward employment conditions, human rights, corruption, environmental pollution, and the use of power are not always clear cut. There may be no agreement about buddhist accepted ethical principles. From an international business perspective, some argue that what is ethical depends upon one’s cultural perspective.18 In the United States, it is considered acceptable to execute murderers, but in many cultures this is not acceptable—execution is viewed as an affront to human dignity and the death penalty is outlawed. Many Americans find this attitude very strange, but many Europeans find the American approach barbaric. For a more business-oriented example, consider the practice of “gift giving” between the about Interview NGO Manager parties to a business negotiation.

While this is considered right and proper behavior in many Asian cultures, some Westerners view the practice as a form of bribery, and therefore unethical, particularly if the gifts are substantial. Bribery in International Business. Transnational bribery consists in offering or giving of money, valuable goods or other benefits as favors, promises or advantages to foreign government’s official for procuring that official do or omit any action addressed to influence on buddhist, economic or business transaction which has relationship with his public function.” Most countries have in what dick, their domestic law stipulation that it is an theology, offence to what's the difference between english and british bribe their own public officials. Notwithstanding, only in the Interamerican Convention Against Corruption, in 1996, and in the OECD Convention, in 1997, did nations assume the commitment to punish bribery of foreign officials. The point here is that until recently, it was against the law to buddhist theology bribe people in your own country, but there was nothing in Canadian law to make it illegal to bribe someone in another country – the only thing that stops you from bribing someone else in and british, another country is the bad publicity you may receive if you are caught, and the media find out.

Why do we care about bribery – is it not a “victimless crime” – actually, there are severe consequences. Buddhist Theology? “In the early 1990s, scandals involving extortion and bribery were a significant factor in toppling governments in many parts of the world. Of Internal? This situation, if allowed to continue, could undermine the most promising development of the post Cold-war era, i.e., the spread of democratic governments and of market economies worldwide.” Ethical Dilemmas and Social Responsibility. There are a number of examples we can look at to buddhist theology discuss ethical topics in International Business management – we will consider the case of •a mining company in the Sudan. •an engineering firm in Lesotho. •Being in a leadership position, as mining and exploration grows worldwide, has put companies in Interview With NGO Manager, an economically advantageous situation. This success in mining has helped economies, but the increasingly risky and challenging locations in which mining companies operate, create situations which necessarily include dealing with contentious ethical issues. Ethics, as effected by the Environment. The circumstances which effect Ethical considerations in theology, the new millennium are circumstances caused by drastic changes in the; •Competitive environment which is maglev uk, causing companies to theology make decisions in a global context and resulting in actions which sometimes negatively effect their employees or customers •Political environment (regional, national and international) and the consequent laws and science, regulations that are established. •Social-Cultural environment which has been influenced by immigration patterns worldwide and theology, a continued movement of Essay about NGO Manager populations from rural to buddhist theology urban areas. •Technological environment which has effected communications regionally and globally and also effected the work environment and productivity.

•Economic environment which sees currency fluctuations and international NGO’s like the IMF and World Bank playing a more significant role in national and regional economies. •Stress to maintain corporate economic competitiveness also influences corporate objectives and has consequences for With consumer priorities. Approaches to Social Responsibility. A number of textbooks and buddhist, websites discuss Social Responsibility, in the context of how companies are behaving ethically, in terms of what moby dick symbolize Four general approaches •Obstructionist Stance. oWhen a company places barriers to customers complaining about theology ethical situations, or makes it difficult for ethical circumstances to be resolved. Companies typically do this by With NGO Manager, requiring customers to fill out forms, or have certain versions of receipts or go through particular processes.

Of they can make it difficult to get action from a complaint by taking to buddhist long to example of internal reply, or having no specific information on how to complain, or to whom. Buddhist? •Defensive Stance. oWhen a company avoids blame, or says “it wasn’t our fault”, or tries to make the customer belief nothing can be done at all. Sometimes managers insist their job is to make money for on the sparknotes the company and anything that takes away from that objectives is not important. Companies are also defensive when they say “we are obeying the law” to the exact letter, and not taking into account “fairness” or being compassionate” – some recent examples include situations where travel agencies and airlines go bankrupt and leave vacationing people stranded overseas. Theology? •Accommodative Stance. oFirms who not only meet the standards expected, but go further, often receive the reward of repeat customer purchases and good PR which helps in branding in example validity, a competitive environment. Some examples include companies allowing customers to exchange items for products that are not exactly the same, but similar, or allowing customers to return items for warranty even if they do not have the original receipt. •Proactive Stance. oWhen companies reach out to theology customers to tell them, in on the goffman, advance, some information they need – such as letting a customer know a warranty period may expire several weeks in theology, advance, or that a product will soon be withdrawn so they have the option to buy spare parts. Preface to 1999 Edition of ICC Rules of Contract. ICC is extremely pleased to note that the “1996 revisions to the ICC rules were punished; substantial progress has been made in addressing extortion and bribery in international business transactions. Most importantly the OECD, “Convention in Combating bribery of foreign public officials “(hereafter called the OECD Convention.)Was signed by 34 countries in Paris in Dec 17, 1997 and entered into maglev uk force on theology, Feb 1999.

The OECD has established a monitoring programming to assure effective and consistent implementation and enforcement of the what symbolize convention. The monitoring programme also concerns the compliance with the “revised OECD Recommendations”, which among other subjects, urges the OECD member countries to buddhist disallow tax deductibility of bribes to the difference foreign public officials. International price fixing Diamonds. DeBeers, a giant South African diamond supplier, which has vertical and horizontal monopoly over much of the diamond mining and diamond distribution industry, has agreed to 1/4 of a billion dollars ($250 M) to buddhist settle an outstanding lawsuit in the U.S. Many years ago, DeBeers was sued by American jewellery retailers, manufactures, and other people in the business, who claimed that DeBeers had been guilty of fixing prices – thus artificially inflating the price of diamonds and diamond jewellery.

DeBeers did not settle this giant lawsuit – instead, they avoided it by english, refusing to do direct business in the U.S. Now that the U.S. diamond market has become very large (55% of global retail sales), DeBeers wants into the U.S. again and in order to do that they agreed to settle this old lawsuit. The U.S. judge reviewing the case approved the conditions based on buddhist, DeBeers agreeing to comply with U.S. anti-trust laws. This lawsuit settlement follows an action in 2004 in the difference english and british, which DeBeers pleaded guilty to fixing prices of industrial diamonds and agreed to a $10 M USD fine International Company and Ethics. The issue of business ethics is engaging companies more and more – both domestically and internationally. Theology? This trend is accentuated by high-profile examples of breaches of accepted standards of ethical behavior. For example, the recent Enron case where inadequate checks and balances within the firm enabled unethical behavior to run alice sparknotes occur, a development made easier by the failure of the external auditor to fulfill its role properly. Assumptions about ethics and business are influenced inevitably by fundamental beliefs about the role of business in society. On the one hand, there are those who believe that the sole social responsibility of buddhist theology business is to generate profit. For some proponents of this view, profit generation itself takes on a moral dimension whereas others see profits as the key to wealth generation – the main way of addressing social issues (Davies, 1997, p. 88).

On the other hand, others believe that the role of business is much broader than that of profit generation and that all those who are affected by the way a company operates – shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, future generations (especially in relation to environmental issues) – have a legitimate interest and stake in the way a company conducts itself. Levi Strauss is one of the world’s largest brand-name clothes manufacturers and also one of the first international companies to adopt a corporate code of run alice sparknotes conduct to buddhist apply to all contractors who manufacture and on the run alice goffman sparknotes, finish its products and to aid selection of which countries in which to operate (DeGeorge, 1993, p. 118). Buddhist Theology? The Code of Conduct has two parts. 1. Business partner terms of engagement: Levi Strauss uses these to select business partners that follow workplace standards and run alice goffman, practices consistent with its policies and to help identify potential problems. In addition to meeting acceptable general ethical standards, complying with all legal requirements and sharing Levi Strauss’s commitment to the environment and community involvement, Levi Strauss’s business partners must adhere to the following employment guidelines: •Wages and benefits: business partners must comply with any applicable law and the prevailing manufacturing and finishing industry practices. •Working hours: partners must respect local legal limits on buddhist, working hours and preference will be given to those who operate less than a 60-hour working week.

Employees should also have at least one day off per week. •Child labor: use of child labor is buddhist, not permissible in any of the facilities of the business partner. Workers must not be below 15 years of age or below the compulsory school age. •Disciplinary practices: Levi Strauss will not use business partners who use corporal punishment or other forms of physical or mental coercion. •Prison/forced labor: no prison or forced labor is to be used by business. •Discrimination: while respecting cultural differences, Levi Strauss believes workers should be employed on the basis of their ability to do their job •Health and safety: Levi Strauss undertakes to use business partners who provide a safe and healthy working environment and, where appropriate residential facilities 2. Country assessment guidelines: these are used to branches address broad issues beyond the control of individual business and are intended to help Levi Strauss assess the degree to which its global reputation and success may be exposed to theology unreasonable risk. It was an on the run alice goffman, adverse country assessment that caused Levi Strauss to cease its engagement in China in the early 1990s, largely on human rights grounds – a decision that has subsequently been reversed. In particular, the company assesses whether: •the brand image will be adversely affected by the perception or image of a country among customers; •the health and safety of employees and their families will be exposed to buddhist unreasonable risk; •the human rights environment prevents the company from what moby, conducting business activities in a manner consistent with the theology global guidelines and what does moby dick symbolize, other company policies; •the legal system prevents the company from adequately protecting trademarks, investments or other commercial Interests;
